I tend to say: there is no really good tc for that lens, because it is too slow and a zoom lens with a too long zoom ratio, which compromises quality too much for my taste, when you add a tc.

That said, the choices are not many, currently. In fact the only good quality tcs, that might be available for Pentax AF are the Tamron 1.4x and the Kenko 1.5x, both would somehow work with that zoom. The Sigma Apo tcs will probably not fit mechanically and may damage the lens and all the Chinese Promasters and clones, well they would not be my choice.

From what I have read, Ben is correct about the 55-300 with TC. Here is a test which one of our members did over at that other forum:

Ben suggestion for a 1.4 TC is right,

I have a DA 55-300 and a kenko 2x TC, images at long end are really soft, only good thing is the AF works all the times with TC on.

My (older) 1.4x TC is a Kenko, but the degradation in the last shot matches my own experience with the 1.4x on my (then brand new) 55-300 last September - otherwise the 55-300 seems to be a good lens (and very light).

One other point, but not associated: the 55-300 comes with a bayonet-fit petal hood - but it's fragile rubbish! A screw-in collapsible rubber hood is much more convenient and better, especially with a polarising filter on the lens as you just turn the hood to rotate the filter!
