Sigma 24-70 HSM might be worth nutty pricing

Sigma 24-70 2.8 HSM Vs Canon 24-70 2.8 L, S Wins?!!: Canon SLR Lens Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

The http://forum.xitek.com/sorthread.php?threadid=600293 link w/ the samples is totally hammered so you can't view them though

For the benefit of others:

The first link is to a forum where someone posts samples from a Sigma 24-70 and a Canon-L 24-70. The Sigma has better results shown at 70mm.

The second link is to the website where the guy doing the tests hosted more images. But it is down right now.

I think this nicely summarizes why we use our Pentaxes?

A more official review of it seems to confirm it's better than Canon's 24-70L, but the no comparison w/ Nikon's 24-70 which is currently *the* standard nor the Tamron 28-75 which is what it'd probably compete against:

I've seen some comparison shots with the Sigma vs. Canon & Nikon 24-70mm that conclude that the Sigma beats the Canon hands down, while the Nikon is still a little bit better on vignetting.

The Nikon does have its weak side because the weight distribution on that lens is pretty awful. If you don't have a D3 or a battery grip your wrists are going to be aching after a while. The Sigma doesn't have that problem. It balances very well.

The Tamron? I would never use that lens on a FF camera. And that's pretty much what a 24-70mm lens is all about in my opinion... Especially for the price range we are talking about here. If you already bought a camera that costs $3000... Tamron doesn't get close. Maybe on APS-C? http://www.photozone.de/canon_eos_ff/418-tamron_2875_28_5d

This is just my opinion though...

Could you point me at this comparison? I've been checking various forums but haven't seen it compared directly w/ the Nikon 24-70 for sharpness yet.

The Tamron seems to be fine on FF after you stop it down one or two stops and there's no difference by f/8 between it and the Nikon. It's the likely comparison w/ the Sigma for people who won't spend the bucks on an OEM lens (or a used FA*24-70 in Pentax land).

Funny related story on the Nikon: a friend w/ a D700 (no BG) and 24-70 let me try it for a little while at a family event and it happened to be over his pelican case. We both said "what's that noise?" It was me inadvertently drooping the tip of the 24-70 into his pelican case. Lucky the pelican case was soft or I would have ended up paying for it It is a bloody heavy combo...amazingly sharp images though...you can measure the zit sizes on the bride pictures he showed me

It might have HSM for Pentax, but it will have to go a very long way to be better than my Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG Macro (the older lens) which is one mighty lens itself......

All the comparisons I've seen between the old Sigma 24-70 and the Tamron 28-75 have the Tamron clearly winning the sharpness race (assuming the Tamron isn't having BF/FF issues and the Sigma isn't decentered...not that this means the new HSM one won't be as flaky ;-)

This looks a heck of a lot better than I was able to get for f/2.8 out of the 3 Tamron 28-75 copies I returned:

It wasn't on the internets, so I can't give you a link. It was a friend of mine who showed me some test shots he had taken with them.

For us Pentax users the Tamron 28-70mm a great lens value for money (although it lacks wide-angle) and you can probably make a comparison when the Sigma appears in K-mount.

However, for users with Canon 5D mkII its not so good, with unsharp corners and loads of vignetting. (almost a waste of a good and very expensive camera)

I believe the Sigma 24-70mm HSM is meant to compete with the C&N 24-70mm lenses on FF cameras. It's a plus that you also can use it on APS-C cameras, but its not its main purpose I think.

That's even better...did he do tests on a tripod, manually focus w/ liveview, and use the same settings on the camera?

It must be some form of insanity but man do I want that new Sigma! And yet you are so right, the Tamron 28-75 is arguably one of my most-used lenses, producing excellent images. It practically never leaves the camera. So I don't know why an extra 4mm and HSM seems to be worth double what I paid for the Tamron? I just know it's a matter of time before I own this lens. I've got too many already, somebody talk me out of it!
