macro: sigma 105mm f2.8 EX

I am considering this lens (the non-DG version) to mess around with macros, no real necessity or need.

What do you guys this of this lens?

I can get it for $240 locally, which seems like a Steal. It's the non-DG version, but that one would set me back another $150 or so.

I had a chance to play around with that lens before. It is not sharper than any other competition brands. Tamron 90 macro has better contrast and colour than sigma 105 macro. Pentax DFA 100 macro is definitely contrastier as well (it is sharp wide open but its DOF is so thin that I often get blurr images).

Generally most macros are similarly of good standards.

BTW I had not heard of non DG version of Sigma 105 macro at all.

That price is a fantastic price. I would not doubt its performance at all.

I have the latest DG version of this lens. I have been very happy with it. It is VERY sharp, and makes a nice short telephoto for portraits/candids. I like that it has a focus limiter switch for when you want AF in the non-macro range.

Roentarre - Sigma defintely made a non-DG version. No coatings on the rear element and a different finish, but otherwise most likely the same. They also made a non-DG version of their 70-200mm EX and their 24-70mm EX. There were lenses before digital :-)

Oh, only thing I DO NOT like about the Sigma is the screw on hood. It works fine when it's on, but whenever I try to take it off, I take the filter off with it! A bayonet hood would have been much better!

Thanks for clearing that up. I thought DG version was already around before digital SLR were common place items.
