DA*55 Reviews?...

It appears that the DA*55 is now shipping? Having said that, no reviews in the database yet. Thoughts?...

One thing is for sure: I don't like the bokeh on moderate to long distances either. But if the lens is set at portrait distances -- wow! It's way sharper than the FA 50/1.4.

Both photos are from the full sized ones and resampled/sharpened by me.

Bokeh looks very much like the bokeh I have gotten on some of my FA* 85 pictures. It is not always showing up like that. I kind of like it, but it can sometimes be too dominating in the photo.

Here is an example with the FA*85/1.4 on full opening.

This is not a good picture, but one of few I have ever taken that shows that particular bokeh it so clearly.

Quarc, thanks for your link to your FA*85 photo (love the chicken!) shot at f1.4. To my eye, the bokeh there looks a bit more "nervous" than what is evident in the shots Asahiflex posted above from portrait distance with the DA*55. What say you all?

The DA* 55/1.4 does not like busy backgrounds, just like the FA* 85/1.4 and other fast lenses. It's just about the way they were built. Here's one with the DA* 55/1.4 which also has a distracting bokeh. It really is a single-purpose lens (for portraits) but you can use it like you wish...

If you look at the closeup of the hair in the second one, you'll see some ringed purple and green bokeh--similar to the 43 and 77 ltd (and probably a lot of other lenses, I know, but I've always noticed that with them).

If it behaves like the 43 and 77 in other ways, well, LBA will strike again!

edit--yes I know that's not the most desirable aspect of the bokeh for these lenses, but maybe it points to a similar construction and overall IQ.

I've been excitedly awaiting any news on this lens, in particular because of how much stock I put in bokeh. I must say, from these sample images, I'm underwhelmed. I had anticipated a much smoother bokeh. Maybe I'll turn my LBA onto something else. I'll have to stay tuned and check some more sample pics.

That is not distracting bokeh, but distracting background. Theres no lens that mysteriosly remove distracting background in existence, Thats a job for the photographer! It has a nice 3D effect and is obviosly designed with bokeh in mind...
