Keep looking, there are great lenses out there. Your 50/1.7 should please you in terms of sharpness.

The 80-320 is not a bad lens, but it isn't great either. I'm sure you'll find something you will be happy with if you keep looking.
Love the 50/1.7 but most everything else I have fits that it's ok but not great description.

Not necessarily a sideways move IMO, as you get the benefit of a decent macro with the Tamron, otherwise I'd say the IQ is about the same in general, but the Tamron is better on the long end. Now, if the OP does not mind manual focusing, a good, used K400/5.6 or Sigma 400/5.6 is a viable option as well.

I wasn't referring to the adaptall Tamron, but rather the ongoing recommendations for the Tamron 70-300 LD Di 1:2 Macro, when you already have the 80-320 and are underwhelmed with it.

Although, like I said earlier I doubt any of the lenses you mentioned would be an upgrade. I think you should think prime lenses for their superior IQ and sharpness. The only down side is to zoom with a prime you have to use your feet.

Regards,
Mike

Woops , didn't intend to stir the stuff! Reason I asked about the adapall is I just got the PKA adapter in a kit that I bought to get a fast 50. I don't want to waste money on a lateral move. I'm relatively new to Pentax and I'm just not finding the Qualities I want in what I can afford.

Another vote for the DA 55-300.
May as well invest a little more into an optically better lens than go with a lens that will still cost you something to replace your FA 80-320 but give you little in the way of IQ benefit.

I'll go against the grain and agree with the original proposal. If you already have an Adaptall PK/A adaptor, the Tamron 60-300 is a fine lens but the manual focussing needs to be mastered. Once I got the 60-300, I gave away my F100-300 as the improvement in quality was tremendous (when it was in focus!) and I knew I'd never use the Pentax lens again .

This might be dangerous to admit, but I photograph birds with a Canon 100-400L, and if the subject fills a fair bit of the frame, the Tamron gives comparable results. They don't cost a lot so why not try it.
Oh, just thought of the other drawback - the metal barrel gets cold when the temps not very high!

Tokina AT-X 80-400 if you can find it - just a consideration. AF and pretty small.
