50mm f1.2

Hi, I'm looking at some 50mm 1.2 Pentax lenses.
I'm looking at the 2 lenses below.

OBJECTIF SMC PENTAX 50mm f1:1.2 - (eBay.ca item 370156085759 end time 17-Feb-09 12:43:15 EST)

Pentax 50mm f1.2 f/1.2 lens - (eBay.ca item 120376475744 end time 15-Feb-09 22:45:00 EST)
(Although this guy posts another one up every week. I hope it's not fake)

I notice that the "SMC" is lowercase in one picture and uppercase in the other. Any ideas on why this is? also, are all these lenses made in Japan? Is the country of origin stamped on the lens? I was reading about how Pentax stopped marking the lenses after a certain date?

Also, the Pentax-M goes for about $275US, how much does the Pentax-A go for? I haven't seen any on Ebay or Craigslist.

Thanks.

From the "Lens Reviews" link above:

K version 5 reviews, average price $355USD:
Pentax Lens Review Database - 50mm F1.2

A version 8 reviews average price $511.88USD:
Pentax Lens Review Database - 50mm F1.2

A lot of information on those two links about these two gems.

For the "K" version SMC signifies it was manufactured 1975-1977, and smc signifies 1977-1984.

This lens was not made in an M version, just "K" and A.

Thanks guys.
Just found the link below as well.
K 50/1.2

Do you think there's a blackmarket of knock-off lenses going around? What would you check to see if this is an authentic lens or not?

Thanks.

The upper case style was used for all of the original K mount lens. The lower case style was used for the Pentax-M lenses. This lens and a couple of others (example, 135mm f2.5) never had a Pentax-M version but remained in the catalog and production with the different "name" ring.

On these older lenses, if it's not made in Japan, the "name" ring will just say "Asahi Opt. Co." with "Japan" left off. I don't think a lot of lenses were made outside Japan through the Pentax-A series, except for some 50mm f2s and f1.7s. I haven't seen enough newer lenses to say what happened after that, but usually the really good lenses were still made in Japan until just recently.

I strongly suspect that, due to vintage, they both were made in Japan.

I doubt that there's any "black market" in Pentax 50/1.2's.

They're both gorgeous lenses, optically nearly identical (as far as ~I~ can tell) except for (probably minor) SMC coating differences. Mechanically, the K model is just ever so slightly nicer to handle (focus feel), while the A model has, of course, a set of Ka contacts, making for more "convenient" metering nowadays.

If you're worried about fakes and have some time, maybe jot down the serial numbers to make sure they change from listing to listing

I saw a K version go for about $95 in a buy-it-now last week. It had fungus, but it was gone before I could confirm (a) that it was actually a K 50mm 1.2 and (b) my bid!

edit: oh, $93!

A 50mm 1.2 lenses show up in Mint condition, or even new in box condition, fairly often on ebay. I'd love to get one, but I've spent far too much on lenses(A* 200mm Macro and A* 85mm) in the past month so I'll have to wait quite a while before I even consider it.

So I did win the auction from the Korean e-bay poster in my first post. I got the item in about 4 days, extremely well packed. It looks like it's in great condition. Took a few pictures with the lens. Will get them developed next week. But considering I just got my whole camera setup 3 weeks ago I don't really know a good lens from a bad one.

no, not at all - eBay Store - Matsuiyastore: Nikon, Konica minolta, Zeiss used to have new old stock A50/1.2s on sale one at a time all the way until may be 1-2 month ago...
