Have you considered an earlier model digital SLR? Or are you specifically after a film camera body?
If you don't mind digital, I'd suggest picking up one of the *istD or K100DS cameras that regularly come up for sale on the marketplace of this forum.

As for lenses, probably stick to the kit lens and perhaps a 50mm f/1.4 normal lens to start off with. Then see where you go from there.

If film, what level of automation are you after?

Consider getting a Super Program / Super A with a few manual focus A-series lenses. The camera is a solid performer and should easily fit inside your budget.

Solid camera body - fully manual.
Good for learning.
I started off with a similar camera body - taught me a lot about exposure and not just shooting in the hope of getting one good shot...

Why not come on over to the 'film slr' board, you can see a whole lot about bodies. Though, I'll say, a K1000 is a classic camera to learn on, so it's hard to go wrong there. An ME Super is nice, and they are inexpensive to buy and plentiful: you also get a bit of automation and smallness and a truly lovely viewfinder: the only drawback is that manual metering is less than elegant, in my mind.

Both of these work great with 'M' lenses, which are great in quality but in less demand because they are less convenient to use on the digitals.

I have an ME Super for sale in the classifieds. It has automatic metering, but requires A, or M lenses so you can manually set aperature. No AF, no burst, etc. etc. The good news is it's in Like New - condition. Had new light seals put in 14 months ago.

Sorry for the shameless PR but it really is a nice body. Had a lot of fun with it before my K200d. Have been meaning to try some film stuff with it, but would rather spend that $$$$ on new glass.

Anyway hope you find a good deal, on a body. Also old school goodness should not be underestimated....

Good choice for learning. If this is what you are thinking about I would also consider one of the Spotmatics. The reason is that the lenses for the Spotmatic seem to be in better supply and slightly cheaper in general. For the record, I have both bodies.

For the K1000 check this thread. https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-film-slr-discussion/51137-how-many-k1000s-there.html
For Spotmatic info: Die Cast Pro - Spotmatic Family Traits
That should give you something to do for a while.
