Any reason you're leaving out the tamron and pentax variants? I have the Tamron 90mm macro, and I love it. Well built, sharp as a razor, and, IMHO, a good focal length for candids if you have a little distance to shoot from (though I've only done a few candid portraits with it, I mostly use it for the buggies).

For candid family shots, I prefer short focal length. 105mm is too long for me, even for portrait. You have to yell for the model(s) to hear.

I use mostly from 28mm to 50mm; for portrait, from 50mm to 70mm.

What kind(s) of macro are you shooting? Note that for a 1:1 magnification and 70mm focal length, the object must be about 3 inches from the front of the lens. This is too tight if the object is something that moves (e.g. insects). A 105mm lens at 1:1 magnification gives you about 10" distance.

Sigma 70mm is hands down my favourite lens of all that I've used/owned. Great for portraits, lovely bokeh, sharp (of course), meters really well, and I pretty much can't get it to purple fringe at all. It's awesome.

Here's a sample portrait/candid that I took with it:
100 ISO, f4, 1/350 shutter

P.S. I don't shoot bugs with it so can't comment on that. The 70 is awesome for flowers though, and does macro at 0.91:1 (a bit larger than life size).
