Sell Voigtlander for DA★?

I would really like the DA★ 50-135mm f2.8, but I can't afford it. I do however have a Voigtlander 180mm f4.0 that has taken maybe ten shots in the 12 months I have had it. Should I sell the VL to try make up some of the money for the DA★?

I'm kind of torn because I know the VL is a special lens, but I just haven't managed to get that special something out of it. It's also an awkward focal length for me, hence the scant use.

I don't have the option of getting the DA★ without selling the VL.

if you don't use it, sell it. who cares which lens it is, unless you buy lenses for investment.
i was in the same situation with the A50 1.2, i thought it was awesomeness but barely used it in the end and so i sold it.

Just look at your own images taken by VL 180

If this lens helps you to get the images you want, then this lens would mean something to you. Otherwise, remember to sell it in marketplace

I've had both for about a year, don't carry the 180 with the digital kit because it's too close to 135mm in length. I recently looked at my 50-135 usage, and I'm mostly at the extremes. A lot at 50mm because I want wider and I have that lens on. A lot at 135mm because I want tele and thats as far as it goes. Because of this, and a few other reasons, I'm selling the zoom and will start using the 180 in my main digital kit more often. I can't say anything bad about the zoom, It just doesn't seem to fit me all that well.

I have owned both.

I kept the VL 180. For me it was optically better, smaller, and cheaper. That being said, I do not use it much.

Have you thought about getting a prime in the 50-100mm range instead?

I own the 77mm Ltd. Cannot say enough good things about it. I did want a bit of zoom though. Something a bit beyond 77mm, and something better than my 80-320mm (which gives good results I must add). Something a bit longer than my 16-45 to use as a kind of general walkaround portrait lens, but good for set pieces as well.

Then sell the 180.

the DA* is the 2nd or 3rd best zoom I have ever used (the best would be the 70-200 f4 IS from canon). I am not a zoom fan, but it is one of the best you can get for a pentax mount.

I will say that the use you quoted is why I purchased mine. Problem is that I found it to be HUGE for a 50mm lens (where I used it most of the time), and in the rare place when I wanted the tele end, it was not enough (that and my k10d had backfocus problems with most lenses, including this one).

I hate zooms. I love my 77 and 31. I also love my 50-135*. That's how good it is.

The 77 ltd. is a very good lens and the 180mm Voigtländer is one of the best lenses available in Pentax mount. Both are small and very well built. The focal lengths are very useful. I don't see why you should sell the 180 to get a zoom of inferior quality (although not a bad lens for a zoom, but exhibiting much more distortion and chromatic aberrations while offering less resolution than the Voigtländer). Also keep in mind that the DA* zoom is much heavier (685g. vs. 485g for the Voigtländer) and that it will not be usable on anything other than a Pentax or Samsung DSLR, mostly because of its pronounced vignetting on full frame 24x36 and also because of its lack of an aperture ring. Should you even want to buy an old film Pentax or a full frame Canon DSLR, the DA* zoom would be completely unusable on these cameras, whereas the Voigtländer will fit directly on the old Pentax and with the help of an adaptor on the Canon.

Cheers!

As I see it the issue here is not about lens quality but lens utility.
Buy your lenses according to usage, not just because they exhibit superior optical performance.

The Voigtlander 180mm and the DA* 50-135mm are both good but they are not directly comparable. What is the point of keeping a stellar lens if you don't use it enough? Would you rather be a lens collector with few pictures to show for but have pride of ownership in owning a good glass or would you rather get something versatile enough that will allow you to have more results?

If you're not using it enough dump it. I let go of my Voigtlander 125mm and DA* 50-135mm with no regrets or remorse. Lenses are meant to be used, no place for sentimentality.

I may have a bit of thinking to do here.

Originally I really wanted the DA★ 60-250mm f4.0 that I could use at airshows as well, but P have been dragging their feet on that one.

I'll dive into the local camera store and try out the DA★ 50-135mm on the K20D. If I really like it, I'll proceed with despatching the VL, otherwise it shall be status quo.

I could always sell the VL and buy a Morgan Dollar from Carson City, but I probably won't do that. A silver dollar from the late 1800's will do me no good on an Alaskan cruise.
