Prices on SMC DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED

I've been shopping for an SMC DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED, which has pretty high ratings in the database. One thing that struck me was price range:

Database average price paid: $350
Ebay, last several days: Around $350
B&H: $299, free shipping
Amazon: $280, free shipping

Gosh, durn.

I've been thinking about replacing my Tamron 70-300 with the Pentax and I've noticed a price drop recently too. It's getting awfully close to my "pull the trigger" range... for better or worse

Go ahead and buy it for $280 from Amazon. Got my copy last week ($280) and it's everything it's supposed to be. Beats the socks off all my other low cost zooms - hands down! Solid, sharp at all focal lengths, and works like a charm with Samsung GX20. After using the Tammy 70-300mm with macro, Cosmicar 70-200, Vivitar 70-200, Pentax 18-250, I can tell you that this guy outperforms them all. The operations of this lens and its inherent resolution remind me somewhat of the quality of my DA16-45mm (with which I have had a love/hate relationship & currently I love it.) As you may be aware, the DA16-45 is a med range zoom that gives up very little in resolution when compared to some of Pentax's best primes. You just have to learn to like it and put up with the minimum f4 aperture. It's primarily a day time lens just like the da55-300. But with decent lighting, you get some spectacular results.

Good luck.

lol wow its as if someone was thinking the same thing as me!

I just pulled the trigger> friday

I have had the Quantaray 70-300 Telephoto Macro (Its actually a Tamron Lens rebranded to be a Quantaray for Ritz Camera) for about a year and a half now but I knew that there was something better out there. So basically my Quantaray= your tamron dilemma
Reading reviews and seeing the price come down I finally pounced on it and Im glad I did.

Though I might not be able to give the most comprehensive review yet as I only jut got the lens I have noticed that the lens color rendition and sharpness appear to be MUCH better than my quantaray (tamron). The Pentax 55-300 was faster to focus, has a much sturdier and compact build. Despite only an F5.8 at the 300mm range as apposed to the Quantaray F5.6 at the 300mm range I found the pentax to be much better.
The Quantaray was a GREAT learning lens and at only 100 bucks it couldnt be beat. seeing that I am getting more serious now, the Pentax is a much better option.

It didnt matter if it was mounted on my K20d or K10d. I found the images to be better overall in both cases. I am definitely a happy camper for now

p.s. in terms of price i paid 290 @ amazon
