Takumar 50mm f:1.4 prices !!!

Hello,

The legendary Takumars (50mm f:1:4) sell for US$60+ at Ebay. Today (yes, April the first, but for real) I missed one because another guy offered US$102 for the item.
What do you say about this?

Hi bc_the_path,

You were one of the bidders for the 50mm 1.4 I was selling on eBay recently. Lens prices have gone up a lot, however, you should be patient and you'll eventually find a good deal on the lens. Before I sold mine, I picked mine up at a local shop for $40. Good luck on your search for the 1.4

All 50mm f1.4 prices are pretty insane at the moment. I just watched a SMC 50mm f1.4 getting sold for 230 USD.

Smc-a 50/1.4

I hestitated on 3 (yes, 3) SMC-A 50/1.4 for $80 a piece yesterday (each complete with a Pentax MX). The hesitation came in because I just landed an SMC-M 50/1.4 for $50 on eekbay three days prior.

Believe me, I am kicking myself. But I love the M. What a beautiful piece of glass!

My advice? Look for a spotmatic -- they usually have a 50/1.4 attached. I picked one up for $25 last month because the camera needed repair, but I got a perfect 50/1.4 out of the deal.

That is indeed insane, considering Amazon currently has the FA 50/1.4 in stock for $200.

I feel your pain man - definately a sellers market right now. The hard to find Pentax lenses have always been up there in price on the used market (compared to Nikon/Canon etc.), but now even the "common" lenses are going for relatively high prices. The question now becomes - is this a temporary price shift or has the plateau been permanently raised (as an influx of Pentax DSLR users pick up manual glass due to lower price compared to AF lenses only to find that they like manual focus lenses better - thus keeping demand high)? Ebay has also helped to create this situation - in general, now people are less likely to sell a lens for a "fair" price opting to instead get "top dollar" on the bay - not that there is really anything wrong with that.

Another thing you have to keep in mind - lens popularity goes in waves. Years ago I can remember when the original 40mm pancake was a hot lens to get - commanding premium dollars. Now they are going for considerably less than they used to. I just think part of the problem is that its the Fast 50s turn in the sun. I wouldn't be suprised if the price on 50s goes down in the future as the hype dies down. Unfortunately I imagine that the price of the rare MF and AF lenses will keep going up (hopefully at a slower rate than they do now).

I find that the "BGN" lenses at KEH are often in absolutely perfect condition (to my eyes, anyway), and go for prices comparable to the bidding-war-inflated ones on ebay. Personally I find it ridiculous that they charge a minimum of $13 for shipping regardless of how little you are buying, but at least you can trust the product (which is more than can be said for some of the "mint" items on ebay).

Finn - I would agree with you on KEH "bargain" lenses - in general they are in great shape. I have noticed that KEH is a bit more lenient on the grading of some of the rarer items though (still better than most). Their return policy is top notch - no hassle

Almost all my lenses are KEH "BGN" items. IMO they were all great deals. Easier and safer than Ebay.

With all the adapters available now for other camera systems, you are not only competing with Pentax users when you bid on screw mount lenses, especially the Takumars. They are not as cheap as they used to be, but $100 for a fast 50 is still reasonable.

I dont now if it's the answer, but I can say, that I would pay 100$+ for 1.4 takumar. I dont live in US, where you can get everything so cheap and at your doorstep next day. If I need it, I buy it, because it's the only way for me.
200$ for FA 50mm would cost about 200 in Latvia and it's even impossible to find one.

Hehe I feel so weak now. Only days after I posted in this thread and complained about the insane prices I paid quite a bit for a Rikenon 55mm f1.2.

Oh well.. We all need at least one fast lens, right?
