Any suggestions for what type of hood to use for the 28mm lenses?

Cheers.

I use a Pentax plastic square hood. I think you can still get them from B&H.

Hood

Go to CameraGear.com. They have several to choose from, and great prices.

Are they a US or Canadian company?

I use a couple of different 49mm metal screw in hoods with my A 28mm on my digital body, with a lens cap matched to fit the hood's diameter. Haven't had any trouble with vignetting. The only one of the hoods with a brand name on was meant for Pentax 50mm lenses, the others are generic.

I have a threaded collapsible rubber hood that doesn't really do squat on my 28 (and yes, I've tried the various different ways of configuring it). However, I've had success simply cupping my left hand above the lens to block the sun. I can see the effect instantly in the viewfinder, including whether I'm introducing vignetting. And it takes no room in my bag :-)

Thanks for the feedback.

I was looking at something like this:

49mm black petal lens hood for Pentax Sony Minolta - (eBay.ca item 200282102596 end time 27-Feb-09 17:51:34 EST)

and wondering if a full round or a petal is better? Guess I'll need *something* now that I have that 50mm F1.4 coming my way shortly...

I think *that* petal hood won't do you much good on a cropped sensor: it's pretty obviously designed for a wider-angle lens. In general, I'd say that the petal hoods are mostly only best when they're specifically-designed for your lens, or if your lens is a really-wide-angle that would otherwise take a very short hood.

I prefer round or square/rectangular hoods that'll let you stand the lens on them, in general: there's less hassle about handling them.

These lenses don't seem to be fussy about vignetting, ...since you have that 50 coming, you could always try getting one with a lot of coverage, and if it chances to be *too* long or tight for the 28, you can shift it up to the 50.

I've been using this lens hood on my 28mm 'A' lens-
New! Metal 49mm Standard Screw-in Lens Hood - eBay (item 110351762664 end time Mar-16-09 20:29:22 PDT)
Very nicely made. The same hood vignettes on the 21mm but doesn't vignette on a 24mm, so technically it's a bit short for 28mm.

It is ~20mm in length, ~58mm in diameter. It takes a 58mm lens cap if you want to keep it on the lens.

The seller has nice quality goods. Well-made metal lens caps. I've gotten other metal hoods and caps from eBay that were pretty sloppy.

Well, if solid, metal, and round is what you want, one place worth looking.
