i pulled the trigger on buying this lens...
PENTAX-A 50mm 1.7 *CLONE FOR PENTAX FILM & DIGITAL CAMS - eBay (item 370164741317 end time Feb-25-09 05:50:33 PST)..
for 30 bucks, i could not control myself.....
i found few reviews of this lens, none though with what is
purported to state that this lens' p setting is the same/clone
to the pentax a setting.........
does anyone have any experience with this lens.....
compulsive dave........
also, i found this......... made my eyes spin counter clockwise...
can anyone really interpret this data into double digit iq language??

Did you even read the description before bidding?

was that important?????
my wife always gets a chuckle that i never read instructions...
i figured i had a genetic predisposition to figure these thing out without
benefit of manuals....
i did read the listing .... unless i am more caffeine deprived than usual...
it appears to me that this is mountable (after pin removal) on my k200d...
for 30 bucks, if i am indeed asleep, what the heck...

The P setting is for Ricoh XR-P, and those subsequent models. It doesn't work on Pentax.

You have been taken my friend.

The description is misleading and false. Rikenon-P is not equivalent to Pentax-A. The "P" setting on the lens is specific to Ricoh program cameras. On Pentax film bodies of the same vintage, functionality was limited to Av or manual modes.

DO NOT MOUNT THIS LENS ON YOUR CAMERA. IT WILL JAM ONTO THE MOUNT AND MAY REQUIRE PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE TO REMOVE!! The Rikenon-P lenses have a small pin that jams into the AF drive on your camera's mount. The lens may be modified, but will require partial disassembly.

I would ask to cancel the sale.

Steve

thanks steve... i did ask to cancel the sale... and i'm awaiting response from the seller..
i did ask (post sale, duh) if he had mounted this on a pentax digital body...
i'm curious, is this the same ricoh pin that has been discussed at length in the forum?
i've had some lenses that i have removed the offending pin and everything worked out aok..
i.e. sears 135mm f2.8, vivitar 75-300mm a setting....

This is precisely that Ricoh pin, it came into being with Richoh "P"rogram cameras that use "P"rogram settings on the aperture ring.

The pin can be removed or ground away without much trouble. I don't think the lens can ever have A lens functionality. It could be that no one has tried hard enough.

I would think you could probably rig it, either by swapping a similarly-sized/shaped mount from an A-compatible lens (might give you a whole set of other problems though), or more likely by drilling and putting epoxy on the mount to match the proper A-lens pattern. I know somebody did this with a Rikenon XR 50/2 (non-P version), and while it functioned in AV mode, the exposure was off more and more as the lens stopped down, due to differences in how the aperture mechanism behaves between M/K-series lenses and A/FA/DA-series lenses. If I had to guess, I would say the P-series lenses also follow the same mechanism behavior as the A-series lenses (as there are third party lenses that can do both), in which case it would probably be possible to make it work. I've never tried to be honest. Ah, here's the thread I was thinking of:

hi... thanks for the response(s), if the pin were to be removed, thus losing the 'a' lens functionality, then for my uses, it would not be what i wanted...
i just could have spent a few more $$ to get a pentax smc a 500mm 1.7 lens... but, duh,
i did'nt exercise my normal due diligence.... out of character for a character like me.......
live and learn, thanks to my fellow pentaxians............
still waiting for the seller to respond.... once i get my funds back, i'll go for the pentax a lens..
(or for that matter, anything BUT a ricoh rikenon 'p' lens...)
