Can I justify getting the DA 40mm Ltd. when I have the FA 50mm f/1.4?

This LBA is getting out of control...

I've been asking myself a similiar questions as of late...I have a few fast 50's, FA 31mm ltd, and a couple of zooms that cover the range and often wonder if the DA 40mm's size justifies the purchase since I think that's its main appeal.

Well, supposedly incredible image quality as well.

And I actually have 3 50mm lenses, a 55mm, and a 58mm, so I guess getting hung up on covering the same focal length is moot at this point.

I have a bunch of 50's (including the FA50) and the DA40 Limited.
The DA40 is my current lens of choice right now. And it's compactness, AF speed and image quality (Colors AND sharpness) are absolutely breathtaking. It has become my main lens.

I use the FA50 on occasion when I feel the need for the F/1.4 to F/2.4 range. It creates some nice bokeh effects. and it's a pretty decent portrait lens too. But for most other stuff, DA40 seems to suffice!

easyily...

I have 50/1.7 and 31/1.8 and 40 still makes it on all my outings. It serves as bodycap for my backup camera, and main lens when going out light. It gives you more generaly usable FOV then 50. Stunning image quality straight from f2.8 (it seriously isn't far behind 31ltd), super fast AF and could go on and on...
It's a great lens to have, don't hesitate

Don't debate it just buy it.

DA40 is a wonderful lens.

I have the 31mm and 40mm as my main primes.
I almost never use my A 50mm f1.4

Cheers

Child's play if it's a choice between the lens and a case of wine: if a choice between the lens and paying the rent, not so much.

sorry but I don't think so. I was looking for a decent lens to close the gap between Sigma 10-20 and DA 40. Could I wish for more then 31ltd? You know the answer yourself...
The only problem is that now I have gap between 20 and 31 so I'm eyeing FA*24/2, but no now,...not now

Axl, I had the DA40 in my lineup last year and it is one of the sharpest lenses I've owned/tried.

I only just got back into Pentax and could afford 1 lens for now, so I bought the FA50. Mainly for family/single portraits etc. When I have enough the 40 and a couple of other Ltds will be back in my hands.

The question you have to ask is whether or not going from 40mm (60mm FOV) to 50mm (75mm FOV) is significant enough of a change that you will want that.

For me, after dugrant153 and I had a local meet to test out each other's lenses, I felt that the change from a 28mm (42mm) to 35mm (52mm) was enough to merit buying his FA 28mm F2.8 AL.

As much as I would like to have the vaunted 31mm, it's hard to justify right now and I will see if the 28 will stave off the LBA.

Caveat: this doesn't mean I won't get the occasional madness and still have those periods of lusting for the silver barreled beauty...

Hi,
All depends on how strong is the current bout of LBA and the level of resistance of your body.
I just had the same question and got the positive answer due to the combination of quality of the lens and its low price (found a great deal).
Good luck,

Perhaps this might help:
Don't see it as lens. See it as body cap!
