Digital Camera Review reviews DA* 55 f/1.4

Similar to the glowing (with reservations) reviews we've already seen here. I think if the price of this lens drops to the $500 to $600 range a lot more people will be willing to overlook its flaws.

No big complaint about focus speed ("Still, the 55mm is quite fast"). Your mileage may vary?

.

I believe that was written by JJJphoto, a forum regular here. He also reviewed the DA* 200 f/2.8 for that site.

Indeed. I just dropped in to mention that the review was published ... but I see the folks here are already way ahead of me.

Anyway, good lens ... but not without its flaws. In good/average light I found the SDM focusing to be just as fast as the screwdrive focus on the FA 50mm, but in low light the SDM was usually slower. That said, the SDM was ALWAYS quieter.

There are four staff/contributors over at DigitalCameraReview.com who are Pentax users (myself included) and we were all a little disappointed by the amount of purple fringing wide open with this lens. It's noticeably sharper edge-to-edge than the 50mm, but the color fringing is more obvious at f/1.4 and f/1.8 than it is on the 50mm.

The biggest issue for me was the back focus with the K10D. After I noticed some back focus when I first tested the lens on a K10D we did a series of studio tests with the K10D and eight different lenses to see if it was a problem with the camera. The 55mm lens was the only one that back focused on the K10D. However, the 55mm focused perfectly on the K20D and K2000, so it seems like it's a firmware issue with how the lens communicates focus to the camera body.

Too bad Ned Bunnell made it clear in a blog post last year that Pentax won't be releasing any more firmware updates for the K10D. Hopefully other K10D owners don't have the issue we ran into with this lens ... or if they do, let's hope Pentax changes their minds about firmware updates for the K10D.

Now that the 55mm is heading back to Pentax I just have to wait and hope I can get my hands on a new 15mm Limited sooner rather than later.

Lenses are tools. Same lens but different use and applications.

Personally, I would draw my own conclusion after a street photographer has tried out this lens and made a review "unscientificly".

He tested the purple fringing in an underwater tank thing at the zoo! so obviously CA is going to be bad. Christ! what happened to fair testing...
