Regarding DA* 55mm f/1.4

I haven't used it but have read a few posts about the new DA* 55mm f/1.4.

I'm not sure if this has been asked already. However, why didn't Pentax make a 50 or 55mm f/1.4 Limited to match their current Limited Series?

Because "*" would have probably designated itself a better quality lens than a limited series...

Well... here is my stab at it.

I think the underlying question is why does Pentax make two premium lens models.

The Limiteds vs. the *Star

I am pretty sure I am wrong but I think the LTD's are for the indoor, controlled environment shooters, portrait, event and wedding photog types, and the *Star lenses are for the outdoor sporting event and wildlife photog types. Of which I like to think I am the latter, but in either discipline, there is still a preferrence between primes vs. zooms among photogs.

With that being said, their are not any DA* primes under 200mm... and if you want the features of a DA* w/o the added weight of a zoom, then there you go, the DA*55mm was made to fill that gap. I am not a studio photographer so I don't have the mentality of one. I could easily get away with the DA*55mm and the DA*300mm on a vacation trip and be super happy. Right now I take the DA35LTD but I am starting to think about selling it to convert to the DA*55mm as it is more to my liking as far as focal length is concerened (may not have to buy the DA70LTD afterall)

I am doing a trip to the NC mountains in April and while I may end up taking my whole kit, I really think that the two lens combo could easily do it for me. Now you may be thinking, that is not wide enough, but when I went to the Grand Canyon I used the DA*50-135mm for most of my shots.

Well, back to your question, I think that Pentax will eventually need to offer primes to cover both disciplines of photography.

Just my $0.02 (Rounded up to $0.05 for inflation)
