new Pentax K200D owner

I just bought a K200D, and can't wait to take in suggestions as to what prime lens I should buy first. Anyone?

welcome to the club.
The answer to your question depends on what you like to shoot most and your budget.
The cheapest of the primes is, probably, FA 50 1.4. Very good lens.
Maybe it makes sense to get a zoom and find what focal length you're using most and then get apropriate primes.

I suggest starting out by a Pentax 16-45mm F4.0 zoom. It's a very good lens and you might not need anything else for normal everyday shooting for a long while. Since the K200D does not allow for focus adjustment, purchase a brand new lens that would be under warranty just in case you'd need focus adjustment. Later you may want to accuire a faster lens such as DA 35mm F2.8, FA 35mm F2, FA 43mm F1.9, or FA 50mm F1.4. They're all very reasonably priced now, even the FA 43mm F1.9 Limited.

Before you go jumping in to buy the first prime lens that you can afford, make out a lens plan. Figure out a lineup of focal lengths that you want to cover, and do research on the individual products. There are lots of good threads on this website for a wide variety of lenses. Ultimately, I believe that it's better to save up for a lens that you really want and will keep than to buy the first bargain that fits your budget right now. It will save you a lot of headaches and buyer's remorse in the long run.

I concur with FA50 1.4 as a good first prime lens, it's very versatile especially in low light conditions. I just picked up a K200d as well and and eager to get a low light prime lens I first got the pentax-a 50mm f1.7, which is manual focus. No question it takes great shots but honestly I was missing lots of shot opportunities trying to get accurate focus...I used to shoot manual film Pentax 15 years ago and found this a bit tougher than I thought it would be. I'm aware it's tough to manually focus with the shallow DOF and so on, but it's no fun missing the shot opportunities. I think the FA50 1.4 is kind of no-brainer to start with....keep an eye out and you should be able to pick up a used model in the $150 range.

And if you don't like it you can sell it for what you paid anyways....
