HELP!!Busted my DA* 16-50

Hi All, I am ashamed to say that after a great hike and a bunch of great shots I went and dropped my camera bag. Everything survived just fine, except for the DA *16-50 that was connected to my K10D. I will try to post a photo of the damage. It has separated between the zoom ring and the green ring closest to the camera body. When you connect the lens to the body it leans to the right and down a bit. The optics look fine, and it even still focuses (or at least tries). Does anyone know if I can fix this my self? Can I send it to Pentax for repair? I love this lens, is there anything I can do? I am freaking out! HELP!!

You should NOT try to repair it your self. Send it to Pentax.

Thanks Ben! Do you know if they will charge me a arm and a leg to fix it?

Maybe not an arm and a leg, but definitively an arm.

Perhaps a kidney or two, while they're at it.

Kidneys, arms and legs I have. Lots of money I do not.
Has anyone here ever sent one in for repair? What kind of pocket book pain should I expect?

Why not send it in and ask for a repair quote. You would only be guessing otherwise. You wont be able to use it anyway, so what have you got to lose.
By the graphic description of the damage, it sounds like an arm and a leg is in the right ballpark.

Ouch! That's never good, but from what it sounds like, it should be a routine fix for the repair center.

I don't mean to make light of a really tragic situation, but perhaps we're looking at this too negatively. Maybe you have the brand new Pentax DA* 16-50 tilt/shift. I'll apologize in advance, but a little laughter never hurt anyone.

Every case is different, and you only know once the lens has been checked. Here they have a fixed charge for the initial inspection including the repair quote. This charge is deducted from the final sum if you accept the quote and have the item repaired.
A qualified and well-equipped technician can do a lot in an hour. Spare parts come on top of that. With a fairly expensive lens like this it probably is still worthwhile.
