I don't think anybody would do that - but it is simply handy, if you don't need to change lenses, if you are waiting for the deer on the other side of the valley to appear and then a squirell sits in front of your hide, only a meter away...

I agree. I made a similar justification for zooms in an earlier post on the forum. You can also take landscape shots, without unmounting the camera from the lens.

Yes… it is amazing how often the same things are repeated, but the old questions always resurface again and again... (that's not aimed at you, just a general remark).

What's the point of 50mm-100mm on this monster? Are you going to do portraits or wedding photography with this? ...hand-held?

So you can take this shot:

and then this shot:

and still be ready for this shot:

All without having to change lenses.

Oh, and speaking of portraits, it's not bad for that either:

Obviously, it wouldn't be your first choice for short range shots only, but it's convenient having it, and the lens does a nice job when it's asked to do it.

Nice photos.

One time, I was out with 55-300+x1.5 tc (mostly to test the tc), but this was my favorite shot (at around 55--I'm too lazy to look for the original .pef; no pp other than tilting, cropping and scaling, although it could use some more: it looks like there was dust on the sensor):
