On the used market the 77 holds it's value way better, the 70 goes for around $350US and the 70 about $525US.

IMHO f/2.4 is just too slow, the 77 is plenty small, i am a nazi re. wanting small lenses and it travelled with me for 3 weeks through Croatia and Malta.

my first candid of a street performer with the lens and the guy started screaming at me to not take his picture (after reading lots of candid experiences that say people dont really care...) and i feel maybe the size of even the 31mm intimidated him (or he was crazy).

i was leaning towards the 70da cause it seems the image quality wouldnt be noticeable and cause it was smaller/cheaper. but it doesnt seem so small anymore seeing these pictures.
Another consideration is that with the 70 or 77 you'd be much further away from the crazies. At least out of striking distance!

Yeah that's just gonna happen with freaks, the 77 in black is plenty discrete.

IMHO the shocking AF and pretty nasty cyan bokeh fringing is more of a concern.

Alfisti, curiously I've never had a problem with AF on my FA 77mm Ltd.
As to colour fringing, there is some, like other FA lenses, but I wouldn't describe it as nasty. Perhaps you had a bad copy.

In low light it hunts like a hungry pigmy. As for fringing ......

As you can see the cyan coats every edge, the shirt, the window, the watch, the bricks ... it's just EVERYWHERE.

Until I read your description as to where the fringing was, I didn't notice any.

Fringing can be repaired quite quickly in Photoshop. But the fringing here is quite apparent. I have all of the Limiteds except for the 77...

Maybe it was just that I hadn't seen cyan fringing before, but I would assume that, to with untrained eyes, most would not notice it.

I don't know how that counts as "better" for the 77. In both cases, we're talking about roughly $100 less than current retail. Actually, depending on which retailer you look at, that's a bit less than $100 depreciation for the 70 but a bit more for the 77. I guess if you go by percentage of list that comes out as a win for the 77, but in raw dollars, it's a wash at best.

Double check the retail prices at Aden, it's more than $100 each. The CDN $ is about 20% weaker than the US so the 77 in CDA means you can sell it on the marketplace and pretty much lose nothing.

I'd agree with Alfisti, it *can* be nasty, especially when using wide apertures. Mine also doesn't handle flare that well. Of course it has enough qualities (sharpness, bokeh, contrast, etc.) that if you avoid the conditions where these flaws will show up, you can get great results. But I wouldn't describe it as a general purpose lens like the DA70 can most probably be (I don't have it).

Never heard of that shop, but I was referring to average prices over the last couple of years, not whatever that particular store might be charging right now. Usual price range for the 77 has been $600-$700 (mostly smack dab in the middle); usual range for the 70 is $400-$500 (again, usually right in the middle).

FWIW, "prophotobags" just relisted the DA70 (it had been out of stock the last week or so I've been monitoring it) on Amazon this morning, at $399. However many they got in, there's now one less - I also got a call on a nice little contract assignment (not photography related) this morning, and just spent the proceeds :-)

Actually, I realize "prophotobags" (including its aliases) doesn't exactly have a stellar reputation for accurately reflecting what is in stock and what isn't. I guess we'll see. I bought the lens primarily becuse I am shooting an event next weekend (eg, a week and a half from now) where I could use it, but no biggie if I have to stick to my A50/1.7 and M100/2.8 instead.

In my experience with the 70 the files could handle a ton of sharpening, i have no idea why but you could just keep cranking up the USM and the files look better and better with no halos.
