Any Pentax 500/4 manual focus equivalent

Did Pentax ever make anything like this?

Nikkor 500mm f/4.0P ED-IF Super-telephoto lense

It's relatively light for what it is...

But 500/4? No, nothing.

Closest Pentax is the old 4 element m42 or K 500/4.5. I was keen to get one. But eh, I finally realized a 300/2.8 + Pentax 1.7X AF TC gets me close enough in focal length and speed to that, and I have no doubt better image quality. So I'll stick with that. But it's still no 500/4 in speed let alone the the IQ no doubt. That would be nice.

Had a Takumar 500/4.5 before, pity it's in beaten up condition w/ fungus on all the elements

Here is a comparison w/ a Sigam 70-200/2.8 EX lens, that lens is HUGE:

Although we don't have a 500/4 from Pentax, but we got an even longer one, the FA*600/4:

LOL. The 600/4 is at least twice the weight as well. I've been looking for an old Tak 500/4.5 as well, but the fleabayers keep bidding it over $350, and then you still have to do stop down metering with it and it's twice as big/heavy as that Nikon 500/4 :-P
The Nikon is only 6lb and 15" which isn't bad at all. I'm actually surprised they didn't slap an AF motor on it since the optics look great from that review.

I think the A* 600/5.6 is a close replacement - a little bit longer, a little bit slower, but...

[sniff - I wish I still had mine - sniff]

Why not a 300 F2.8 with either the 1.4x pentax rear converter or if it is an A lens the 1.7x AF TC?

They do make combo's that get colse to 500 F4. (420mm F4 or 500mm F4.5 in the cases I point out.)

Yeah, but with a 500mm, a 1.4x would get you to 700mm--right?

If you are really serious about the 112mm club, sigma makes 300F2.8 and 500mm F4.5 AF lenses in KAF mount

Thanks for the pointer, Lowell. I'll add it to my alternatives list
The Sigma 300/2.8 is a bit pricey but the reviews are good:
Lens Review - Sigma 300/2.8 HSM EX
with only a comment about slight vignetting when used w/ a TC...

I never realized the vignette; that is usually something doesn't bother me much anyway. Longitudenal CA is its greatest (-) for me in certain shooting circumstances (gray overcast day shooting into the trees, wide or near wide open), tho that doesn't stop me from loving it. To add, if you haven't seen my review: PentaxForums.com Third-Party Pentax Lens Review Database - 300mm F2.8 APO EX DG
I'd love to see other owners of it review it too.

The most economical kit getting you close to the speed and focal length would be an older MF Tamron 300/2.8 + Pentax 1.7X AF TC, and you then have AF ta'boot.
