500mm lens for k10d

Bit of advice please guys
I have a k10d with a Sigma 17-70 and a Pentax 50-200 (plus 1.4 converter). Find both these lens give more than pleasing results.
However I am looking for a bit more reach. (500mm) for nature photography.
Looking at Sigma 170-500 if I can get the wife (Treasurer) to loosen the purse string. I t is a bit expensive (AU$ 1100+).
Have seen a Sigma EF-500 DG Super lens, which is much cheaper (just under $500). Is anyone familiar with this lens? Is it an el cheapo meaning comparable results?
Any advice would much appreciated thanks. ??

The EF500 DG Super is not a lens, it is a flash unit.
Sigma EF-500 DG Super Flash for Pentax AF

The big zoom that people seem to like a lot is the Sigma 50-500 f4-6.3 EX DG - also known as the "Bigma". The results I've seen posted with it look very impressive.

Boy that would make a man look like a real idiot, except that the item was listed under lenses, without photo. I think the seller is a bit on the sus perhaps.
Thanks for your advice I'll followup on your recommendation..

If you don't mind manual...

If you just want 500mm (and fast enough that you can easily use your 1.4x converter) then have you thought about an old 500mm f4.5 Pentax lens (either K or as a takumar with a screw mount adapter). I've seen some lovely sharp photos and they go for good prices at KEH (in USA though, not sure about australian availability, probably as bad as UK).

Pros; f4.5, pretty fast for 500mm!
Very sharp
Good value

Cons; weighs an absolute ton
will probably have to spend some additional money on a tripod system (absolutely no way you can hand hold it).
Might need to add an extension tube for close focusing.

I do think this would be the perfect lens for hide photography on a budget though. Stick it on a nice big bean bag and shoot away! But for walk around grab shots it is not the lens to have. So it depends on what you want to shoot.

Thanks a lot, much appreciate your input. I will go and dosome footwork around the shops and also through websights. I have a better idea what to look for.
I may find exactly the right lens for the job and I will drop a line on here if it happens soon.
Great to have a wealth of experience and knowledge to hand through the forums. Keep up the good work, and happy shooting.

K500/4.5 is not bad choice. Few days ago it goes for 650usd on ebay.

I used it for last year and found it quite usefull. Probably good tripod is needed, but personally I use bean bag which cost me 20 euros.

there are some threads in this forum about this lens.
