Da* 11-17?

Does anyone have insider information on the possibility of one of these types of extremely wide, weather-sealed, SDM beasts emerging any time soon, or ever?

I would buy one right this second if it were available, and I remember reading about some Tokina lens for other mounts with a similar focal range... anyone know if this thing is coming?

(I'm trying very hard to resist purchasing the 12-24mm...)

Thanks!

-Tim

It's not on their roadmap, so don't hold your breath. Instead, quick resisting and get the 12-24 :-)

First off, I want to say that I have no real information on the subject. This is simply supposition.

I have not heard anything about a 11-17, but Tokina has an 11-16 lens for Ni* and Can*. Considering the affiliation of Pentax and Tokina, and the Tokina lenses with DA* counterparts that are currently available, it is not implausible that a DA* version of this lens could come about.

Like I said, though. I have no information other than my own observation.

On top of what Gooshin said, the 10-17mm is a variable aperture f/3.5-4.5 while the DA* 11-16mm will be a constant f/2.8. And it won't cost $430 either

If you guys had to guess how far into the future this lens would be available- are we talking more than 2 years? And I'm guessing it would retail at over $1,000 initially... anyone have ideas about that?

This is a big complaint in Pentax-land as Canon folks are raving about the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. Pretty much regarded as the sharpest rectilinear ultra wide angle lens available anywhere*** (and it's fast!)

Wish you guys could get this lens......

As for the price, the Tokina is less than $600, so I don't think the Pentax DA* would be that expensive.....

***EDIT - For affordable under $1K APS-C designed lenses....I think the Canon 14mm f/2.8L and Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 are better, but they're MUCH more expensive, and full-frame.

More than likely this lens will be about 1.5 years down the pike if it ever is going to be made. If you listen to the current suserrations about Pentax's future lens development (and soon to be witnessed (?) contrast AF improvements) then this lens would probably be made with the in lens high end motor allowing for spontaneous and accurate focusing. Cost? Much more than the current Tokina versions... because they don't have an *.
