Tokina AT-X Pro 28-70mm f2.6-2.8, optical defect?

Hey Guys.

I recently acquired a Tokina AT-X AF Pro 28-70/2.6-2.8 (really just 2.8 as far as I am concerned) that has basically never been used. It is a real beauty of a lens, and is also quite a beast in terms of bulk + weight (not sure how it compares to the FA* 28-70 because I have never had one of those...but one day...).

Anyways, I've had it for a few days and I've been trying it out for different subjects and at different apertures. Overall the IQ is great and I really think that this lens has exceptional bokeh, particularly for a zoom lens. I did some flower shots the other day and they look beautiful, as long as I keep the followingn in mind.

One thing that I have noticed is that my lens is extremely soft at the tele end (70mm) at f/2.8 and still some at f/4. f/5.6 and f/8 are great. At the wide end (28mm) all results are great, with a small but still noticeable difference between f/2.8 and other apertures.

I just wanted anyone else's opinion on if I should attempt to have my copy recalibrated. It kind of bugs me that the IQ is so bad wide open at f/2.8. I am wondering if it suffers from a centering defect or something like that. I'm not sure if Tokina will still perform repairs on this older version of the lens, or what it would cost. Maybe I am just expecting too much out of this zoom lens? Does anyone else have a copy of the same lens that has similar (or hopefully, better) results at the tele end?

Any thoughts/opinions/advice would be greatly appreciated! (See below for photos + crops)

-Jim

Here are the two scenes that I shot at 70mm. These two are at f/5.6.

Here are a few 100% crops to give you an idea of the softness. Shots are taken at f/2.8, f/4, and f/5.6, respectively. First shot is a pretty close focus distance (5-6 meters), 2nd scene is near infinity. Notice the weird blur on the building in the 2nd scene at f/2.8.

The f/2.8 crop of the side of the building looks like a pretty clear - and pretty bad - case of CA to me.
