PS..I am such a hack when it comes to shooting out of my specific domain...

Originally posted by G_Money That's just the thing, Marc. When I see images like yours, my own don't make me happy. While photography can be a medium for communication and expression, for me it's always been the opposite. My photographs tend to be taken for me, and I'm very reluctant to share them. I tend to get more satisfaction from the process than from the results. Guys like you exist to inspire guys like me.
I know a fellow on another forum who shoots a lot of street stuff. He's in NYC, so there's plenty of subject matter for him. He shoots with a variety of equipment, a Nikon D700, an Epson R-D1 with vintage Leica glass, and a Kodak DCS-14n with Nikon glass. He tells me he's a Photoshop idiot and his pp work mostly consists of levels adjustments and a little sharpening. His images, however, have this quality to them that wows me. It's a quality that I don't see in my own. Perhaps it's because my images are too familiar to me, but I think they just don't have it.
Over the years I've used Nikons, Canons, Leicas, Hasselblads and Pentaxes and I've never had an image I've been completely happy with. Maybe it's less a case of skill or technique and more a case of self-doubt. It's a corny old joke, but to me photography is like sex, you don't have to be good at it to enjoy it.
I feel like I am being ganged up on my work!! In a good way of course...
As already stated: Ben, you are the tops in your domain = no question in my mind. Brilliance in terms of lighting (no pun)...
G_Money: you statement brings up a good point: it's the vision or what you envision before taking the shot that often translates into a successful image. Please don't sell yourself short in any way. I'm traveling down a path of intent to push myself to become better. It's not the journey everyone must do.
Besides, I get inspiration from others all the time = motivation. Your comments and others encouraging me to keep going is important too. I have my slumps, just like anyone else. It's whether or not you persevere.
Regards,
Marc
