Tamron SP Adaptall 2 60-300mm vs Tamron LD 70-300mm

Can someone tell me how these two lenses compare, beyond the obvious auto focus capabilities of the 70-300mm. I own the LD 70-300mm, but am considering replacing it with this Adaptalll lens. I am hoping to learn more about the Adaptall 2 version first. I saw one, with K-mount adapter, going for $80. Is that a good price--or too expensive? Thanks.

Jewelltrail, I don't know much of Adaptall 2 but did read some good review about this lens. I was watched this from ebay and thought it was a good deal with P/KA adapter for $115. I saw another bid for the PK/A adapter alone with 2 days left going at $66! Hope this could help in regards to price.

That is a nice, succinct review, with good info on the lens--thank you very much.

If no one has specific info on how the 2 lenses compare to each other, perhaps I'll do my own comparison to find out. I do not mind losing AF if the Adaptall 2 is a better performer and the Macro is a non-issue to me on this lens. The Adaptall 60-300mm is an SP lens.

Adaptall-2.com

I know this isn't a comparison, but have you visited Adaptall-2.com?

This is an independent website for Adaptall-2 lenses similar in intent (but not in scope) to Boz's K-Mount website.

It describes the lens as good for a 1:5x zoom, fair to not so in the conrers, hbut not as good as the 19AH 70-210 (if you don't need the reach).

LOL, that was me buying the lens. I wanted to get the PK-A adapter so I bid on the whole package. The lens will be a fun toy to play with.

I personally love the Tamron 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Di LD and I had mine for $90 used. Though it has more CA, I can bet on its sharpness.

I recall the adaptall-2 site mentioning about Tamron 19AH is a better lens overall though a bit heavier and longer.

Wow, you did get a heck of a deal. The one I was looking at only had the PK adapter with it, generic caps, no case, no hood, no manual and no filter!

Thanks Hinman for offering your opinion--your opinion carries significant clout in my eyes. Perhaps I'll stick with the 70-300.

I read the same thing, in several places, about the 19ah.

Thanks Monochrome. It isn't a lot, but there are times I do need the reach. I guess I'll have to compute the information you all have given me and deliberate for a while.

Thanks Everyone!

Thanks, when I was bidding on the deal I was actually going after the adapter.;-) I had two Pentax adaptall adapters for quite a while (a PK and a PK-A) and I didn't realize the PK-A I had was no good. I had to manually dial the aperture ring on the lens because the chip didn't work for some reason. Then when I was reading hinman's post about his problem I decided to try my other PK-A adaptall that I picked up later. Lo and behold I didn't realize I could dial the aperture on the lens from the camera body. I fell head over heel in love with those Tamron lenses again. So I have been a bad boy and stealing all those PK-A adaptalls on eBay.;-)

Were you able to get A aperture bigger than f/4.0 such as f/3.8, f/3.5, f/2.8 etc. I still have that problem that my pk-a only goes to f/4.0 as maximum aperture in Av mode. I have purchased a new adapter from Frank and it should come anytime. And I still want to see if any further scraping on the screw head(s) will fix the problem for me.

A side note, I really like my recent purchase of Tamron SP 70-210mm f/3.5 adaptall-2 19AH. That maybe a better zoom to consider other than the 60-300mm zoom. I have replaced my Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f/2.8-4.0 with A from Komine zoom with Tamron adaptall-2 19AH. The 19AH is not without its problems as it is harder to use due to weight and length and it has CA easily when I test it and close up in 1:2.6 has dismal performance for me. When I reseached on the adaptall-2 lens, a lot of users like the 60-300mm and many will comment on 19AH on better sharpness, color and contrast.

I now have two copies of 19AH. I will put it in marketplace later when I manage find a matching lens hood. I get my 2nd copy just to get the original lens hood 49FH in 67mm size which is very difficult to find due to the different design of 19AH with a built in partial lens hood on the lens outer barrel.
