wide angle or small zoom?

Hi,

Basically I am a bit torn between buying either a wide angle like the sigma 10-20 or a small zoom ie 16-50 as per the pentax . It seems the latter is more convenient but I would like a wider angle ... currently I have a 28-200 and a straight 50mm.

Basically is 16mm wide enough and good enough quality in comparison to a dedicated wide angle.

Secondly, if I go for a small zoom I am a bit confused as to which is best as there appear to be a lot ie sigma 17-70, tamron and then the new PENTAX 16-50 mm F 2,8 ED AL SDM.

Its a bit of an open question but any advice would be welcome.

thanks

You are comparing two different categories, super wide and wide-normal.

I use my 16-45 95% of the time. I use my 10-20 when I want to get the super-wide effect, and when I want to distort the subject and get super close.

If you're accustmed to 28mm on a Pentax DSLR as being your widest, then 16mm is indeed a *lot* wider. Whether it's wide "enough" is another matter. Would be for me 99% of the time, but clearly, it isn't for everyone or no one would make a 10-20. The 16-50 also has the advantage of being constant f/2.8, making it much more useful indoors than your 28-200.

BTW, no ure what you mean by a "small zoom", but none of the lenses you mention are particularly small in size. "standard zoom" or "normal zoom" or "wide - short telephoto" seems like phrases that would more accurately describe what you re asking about (eg, the 16-50, 17-70).

thanks, I wasn't sure of the correct term in fact.

I am comparing the two types as I can't really afford two lenses but I know want something that can go wide(r) than I have. If its going to be in use 90+% then it seems a better investment.

Now which one ...

thanks

The 12-24 is highly regarded and is a very useful range.

Avoid variable aperture zooms. You may find shots at around 10-15 too gimmicky and odd looking for your taste. So find samples first.
