something like a 70-200 2.8. Like the one of canon with very silent AF and also the AF functions of that Canon lens (You can lock it so it won't focus that close).

An "optimised for digital", *relatively affordable* 24mm or 28mm f/2 or faster would be extremely appreciated.

A sealed version of the same would also be highly desirable.

SMC Pentax - A * Telephoto 135mm f/1.8 Lens - *RARE* - eBay (item 270359726550 end time Mar-23-09 19:38:57 PDT)
I'm bidding on that one and if it goes for my max bid it will be quite the steal.

Think the 28/2 could do nicely.

And don't even talk about FF till there's a fast 85.

I will add to earlier citations based on reputation (and frustration with other-brand alternatives), since if I actually had one I wouldn't need a remake:

FA* 28-70 / 2.8
A* 200 / 4 macro

and something I didn't notice previously mentioned:

Full-function (i.e. supports function of any lens), weather-sealed, modest gain (1.4x or even only 1.2x), high-quality (OK, as good as can be expeced) rear converter - something I can leave on the camera in harsh conditions and still exchange lenses. SR working with older lenses is cool, why not a degree of weather-sealing.

Ok, if you're talking just primes, there's the DA* 200 f/2.8. Throw in zooms, and you've got the DA* 50-135. Still lacking, but not as totally as you've made it to be.
Read faster than f/2.8...
The fastest long lens from Pentax in current production is the DA* 200mm f/2.8. Pentax hasn't got any lens in current production that is faster than f/2.8 beyond the FA 77mm f/1.8 Limited.

Nikon and Canon already have long lenses with wider maximum apertures from the 100-135mm range onwards like the AF DC-NIKKOR 105mm f/2D, and AF DC-NIKKOR 135mm f/2D, EF 100mm f/2 USM, EF 135mm f/2L USM

If you're comparing with the Pentax 200mm there is the AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED and EF 200mm f/2L IS USM.

You must be good at focusing!

A 500mm or 600mm tele lens of the mirror variety, something light and not too bulky for critter pics, and hopefully having dealt with CA and the other issues that cropped up with the mirror lenses. Add reasonably fast like f4.
I have a 600/f8 and the depth of field on that is shallow enough so I think such a mirror lens at f4 would really only be useful for shooting the heavens! Actually, not a bad idea on that count.

On the mirror lens front, I am surprised that someone hasn't tried making one that is offset so as there is no hole in the main mirror. It might even be able to be stopped down.

The hole in the main mirror is not really an issue because the secondary mirror is in front of it any way. also, making it offset would then require a second optical path. if you really want this, get a newtonian telescope

Are you saying you'd pay $4-6K for this? :-)
People are too cheap to pay for the 600/4 which you can still get now for $6-7K

I certainly would if I was making a living from photography.
I have a Nikon gearhead friend who has the 200mm f/2 and if the DA* 200mm f/2.8 is a lovely lens, the Nikon is simply... WOW
FA 600 f/4... nah, one has got to be a serious sports shooter or wildlife shooter for it, which I'm not.

I was the high bidder from I believe the first day to less than 1 minute before the end. My max bid was $1200. I was actually hoping I wouldn't win though. I bought a FA* 85mm a few days after I first bid on the 135 thinking I was going to be outbid in no time. Instead I was biting my nails to the end because I would have likely just had to sell the 135 within the next few weeks anyway, None-the-less, I wouldn't have minded getting it for below $1000.

I'm glad I didn't as well. I found out that you can get a 135/2 in Canikon for $1K new...and used ones for $750. Makes the argument for a dual system arrangement better
