Thanks for the review benjikan
I think I've made up my mind. If I had been looking for a portrait lens I might have gone for the FA 77mm but as it is the 70mm seems to be the winner. For the type of street shooting I like, fast AF and quickshift manual focus will be useful:

DA 70 on an LX? Will it work? I see it mentioned that the DA70 will work full frame but the LX body can't control the aperture settings unless on Program or Shutter priority - correct?

The only point at which the 77 is slightly sharper is at the optimum aperture of f5.6 - f8.0.

Here are the tests from Chasseur d'Image in France.
The 77 seems better at f/1.8~2.0 also!!

I want to but I can't....
Because the DA 10-17mm is next on my list!
And after that I'm thinking about the DA* 50-135mm...and possibly a wide prime (after a quick bank robbery probably)

IMO, the 50-135 is the ultimate street shooter, but the small sizes of the 70/77 can't be beat. Being as unobtrusive as possible when steet shooting brings advantages.

For strictly street shooting applications, the 70 might be slightly better due to frame-wide sharpness an a slight advantage in AF speed, but overall, I think the rendering of the 77 is the most pleasing of any Pentax lens besides possibly the 31 or A* 85 1.4.

I just went through this 70 or 77 conundrum for casual portraits, and although it is a tough decision, I'm really glad that Pentax makes both of these lenses. Trying the 77 out at a meet-up I was struck by the sharpness at 1.8 (holy moly!), and honestly it is a truly gorgeous object to hold and display. However, I ended up ordering the 70 just last week because of what has been mentioned here (faster focus, less CA, cheaper) and considering I also shoot landscapes where wide apertures are not king.

With Canadian Pentax prices preparing to skyrocket next week, I had a moment of weakness and ordered the 50-135 at the same time! (I already have the 10-17 and it is incredible, too.)
