AL II Lens vs. AL I Lens

I want to know what exactly is the difference between a AL II Lens and an AL I Lens

As in a Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II Lens

The reason I'm asking this is because I have a Pentax *ist DS camera with a Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL I kit Lens and am probably going to be upgrading to a K20D but I"m not sure if the Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II Lens will have better image quality. If not, then I'll just buy the body only and a 18-250mm DA lens instead.

Is the Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II Lens worth the extra $$ if I already have the other?

The answer is ... I

The newer version is better but not that much better. The money saved by buying the K20 body only could go towards a better lens.
The kit lenses are methadone and the better lenses are the heroin. Collecting kit lenses would make you an LBA sufferer who is in treatment.

I'm pretty sure there is no AL I
There 's AL and there's AL II released together with K20D, supposedly with slightly higher resolution to match the K20D's higher Mpix.

If you only pay a small amount extra for the AL II package, and sell the AL to recoup a few dollars, I think it's worth doing it. But not worth paying full price for the AL II itself.

Good luck with your purchase.

Next time use the search button. A comparison thread here:

get the body only and go for some Tamron or sigma F2.8 lenses, they are better than the kit lens

thank you for the comparison, it was worth reading.

In hindsight though, if I had used the search button you wouldn't have had the opportunity to advertise your wonderful comparison to newcomers.
