17-70mm

A more usable zoom range, also constant f4, performance seems about the same for common focal lengths. The only downside is that it is a bit pricier, about 55% more $.

f/4 is enough in a wide to modest tele zoom.

Today I went to an indoor function at the Kootenay Brown Pioneer Village in Pincher Creek AB. I took with me four lenses: DA 12-24/4, DA* 16-50/2.8, DA* 50-135/2.8, M 100/4 and the AF 1.7X converter in case I need to bump up the length on the 50-135.

I used only the DA* 16-50. I just looked at the 32 images that survived my [Del] key, and of them, one (1) was at f/2.8. I could have shot that one lonely image at f/4 instead of f/2.8 if I had bumped the ISO to 800 from 400. Wide angles render wide f/stops not so necessary.

Okay, so now I am thinking the Tamron 17-50mm F2.8.

What do you guys think about that? I've read some great reviews about it. Quite a bit cheaper than the DA* 16-50mm F2.8 and pretty much the same as the DA 17-70mm.

Updated options:

1. Pentax DA 16-45mm F4
2. Pentax DA 17-70mm F4
3. Tamron 17-50mm F2.8

I too once had to make my choice for which wide zoom to select. When I chose, the Da 17-70mm was not an option. But, if it was, I still would have chosen the Tamron 17-50mm. It is an amazing, fast, constant aperture zoom. IQ is great throughout the range, and it is very good wide open. I can put it to use when I hike, and can use it indoors when low-light shooting, without a flash, is my goal. The lens is comfortably priced as well.
