Pentax DA 18 to 250 WOW

Just returned from Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. I bought the 18-250 a couple of months before going. I wanted to reduce the size and weight off my sling pack. I only took one other lens, my 50mm macro. Never took the 18 to 250 off. Took close to 3,000 pics WOW what a versatile lens.

I especially like to take panoramas. I took 52 of them ranging from 2 pics to 8 pics per pano. I use a tripod about half the time and can not tell the difference.

I have the Tamron version and I agree--it's a terrific travel lens! (But you do need to post some photos.)

Last year my wife & I fulfilled a lifetime ambition of travelling extensively through parts of North America, Australia and New Zealand, finishing up in Hong Kong. During that 4½ month period having driven approx 20,000 miles, I amassed a grand total of over 30,000 photos using a pair of K10D bodies, respectively fitted with a Tamron 18-250mm and a Sigma 10-20mm. Roughly 80% of those 30,000 shots were taken using the 18-250mm zoom and I thoroughly recommend it as a flexible walk-around lens. The Sigma is a naturally a fantastic lens for taking architectural interiors/exteriors and sweeping landscapes, when the 18mm end of the Tamron is occasionally not quite wide-enough.

I use a lot of Takumars and other MF lenses and this is my only AF lens. It's very nice especially when you don't have the time to fiddle with manual settings.

Last sunday I went to a nearby (frozen) lake with my kids (2 and 5 year old) and I just pointed my K100D towards myself (holding the camera in my hand) with my boy in my lap and got this nice pic:

I bought my Pentax DA 18-250 specifically to be able to shoot from the stands at a Major League baseball game while still being able to turn to my friends sitting next to me and get shots of them as well.

I had low expectations but the lens surprised me with it's versatility and very high quality - particularly between 28 and 200mm. The slow f/6.3 at the long end has yet to be a problem for me... because I'm only going to be shooting at 250mm while outdoors.

This is a fantastic vacation/travel lens that I recommend highly. The only thing I can think that would make it a bit better is weather resistance. And, yes, the Pentax and Tamron versions of this lens are pretty much the same.
