Current new 77mm ltd or 85mm 1.4 street price?

I was wondering of anybody got a new 77mm limited or 85mm FA 1.4 from a store like bhphotovideo or Adorama recently and what you payed.

The FA77 has been consistently priced in US about $670, but with $100 rebate available a year ago most buyers ended up paying $570 nett plus shipping. Btw if you look in nextag.com you'd see history lowest = $570 but that was because some stores advertised the after-rebate price. Recently the Canadian ebay store (prodigital2000??) listed a few FA77 @ ~$550.

Hope this helps, cheers.

You can find the FA85 fairly consistently on ebay from a couple sellers in Japan, usually $1250 range (USD), and the FA77 is still a current lens, $679 from Adorama & BHphotovideo.

I wonder why they discontinued lenses like this and the FA*80-200 . Couldn't they have just changed the colour, tweaked the coating and kept selling them.

Thanks everybody. Just want I needed to know. To bad about the 85mm - I would pay 800us$ for a new(ish), but 1250 plus 25% vat on import... I'll see if I can't find a 77mm for a okay price here in EU...

In pentax's head FA* 80-200 wasnt discontinued. It turned into DA*50-135. I don't understand the reasoning for not producing the FA lenses as well, it's always good to have choice isnt it? Maybe there's not enough factory capacity to produce too many product lines?

You're probably right, due to a limited Pentax market they feel they won't sell enough of both the DA*50-135mm and the FA*80-200mm if they were both in production to make them profitable lenses. Likewise the 77mm ltd and 85mm f1.4.

Here's why it's $1000+ : it's big, it's heavy, it's beautifully made, and the photos it takes are just magnificent;

That being said, the 77 Limited is absolutely gorgeous as well - not as fast, so you don't get the exquisite blur of the lens at 1.4 (the shot above is at about f5.6 because I'm a sharpness freak), but gorgeous bokeh. And the 77 is sharp at infinity, which the FA* is not - it really is specialized for portraits from 6' to 10'.

My favorite lens, and the viewfinder at 1.4 is bright and wonderful - all lenses should be that fast. When you put a 4.5 zoom on after, you just think 'yech' and realize how dark that truly is...

Cheers,
Cameron

Dof dof

I am beginning to get fed up with all the razor thin DOF pics flooding internet. It is really a stupid trend. I have seen pics where perhaps 5% of the pic was within DOF and the rest of the pic blurred. I have even seen documentary shots where highly relevant backgrounds were totally blurred and as a consequence the point of storytelling was lost.

I have also seen plenty of pics shot at 77mm and 85mm where the ears are totally blurred out and also the entire hair. In 90% of the cases it does not look good at all.

Kind regards
.lars

I don't understand why this lens on ebay is going for so much Pentax FA 85mm F/1.4 AF Lens New Boxed Hoya HMC Filter - eBay (item 130296634279 end time Apr-03-09 20:41:29 PDT)

There can't be that much sample variation on a premium lens such as the FA* 85/1.4, and you can find excellent condition copies easily for $1200 range.
