Bought a Brick

I just won an auction on Ebay for a Soligor 70-222 (!!?) mm f/3.5 lens. I got it for $25, so my expectations aren't too high. If nothing else, I'll use it to scare my friends, who think my K10D with the kit lens is huge and heavy. The description says the lens weighs 2.5 lbs. Wow, sounds solid to me!

Big Moose of a Zoom Lens for Pentax K-Mount! Look & BiD - eBay (item 110370152705 end time Apr-04-09 12:52:20 PDT)

Just thought a lens with a range of 70-222mm would be unique. I've googled it, and it seems the only people who have it or have heard of it are in Finland or Serbia. (and speak Serbian and Finlandese)

Any thoughts, info?

I do not know anything about this lens, though I find the seller's description of its focal length humorous indeed:

I have always been kind of facinated by early zoom lens with odd-number zoom limits, such as the Nikkor 43-86 lens. Well, here's another one. Soligor 70mm to 222mm. Why 222? Why not 221? Or 223? I suppose the answer is that at some zoom limit further out, the resolution slithered down below limits that were acceptable to the designer. Anyway, it goes 70mm to 222mm with a maximum f/3.5 aperture throughout its zoom range.

Shipping cost is almost equal to the price of the lens itself.

Cool!

I'll reveal a well kept secret to you: some Serbs and Finns are rumored to know some English words.

So how about asking the weird foreigners in English or asking for translation help here?

No offense. Sorry, I know that lots of them know and speak English very well. However, the ones who know about this lens seem to post on native language forums. I guess the correct term is Finnish? or Swedish?

Both, actually. Out of the hat, something like 90-95% of Finns are Finnish speaking, while a portion of less than 10% is Swedish speaking. Both are official languages.

Finlandese sounds much more interesting than Finnish. I've always thought that finnish sounds too much like finish (like we are at the edge of the world or something.)

About the lens: There seems to be C/D printed on the aperture ring which I believe means that this belongs to Soligors high-end lineup. I think Soligor C/D lenses were to compete with Tamron SP and Vivitars Series1 lenses.

Then I would be extremely happy and hang on to this lens, even if handholding it will give me arm cramps. Hey, if nothing else, I might build a little muscle from handholding this thing!
