only done a couple of shots but from this small sample it looks quite sharp. $20 at the local pawn shop.

Sorry for the delay but I'm just updating the list today. I think your variant is already in the Bestiary, as A03.
Don't see that one there yet...

It's A03 in the last section, named "KA-mount (8)" here. Or maybe you are alluding to the fact that there was a mistake in that listing? "Vivitar" is now properly mixed case; before I had it all upper case.

Hmm, I see it now. When I last looked, only A01 and A02 were there. Odd... must have just gotten stuck in my browser cache or something.

On the bestiary page, it says:
A23 "Vivitar / 28mm 1:2.8 / MC / WIDE ANGLE JAPAN / 49mm / IMAGE by" [make?]

Make should read Cosina. It's clear to me from this thread; https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/41025-cosina-mc.html, that my Image and Kalimar A 28mm f/2.8's were manufactured by Cosina and are therefore variants of #A21. They are identical in every way except for the writing around the face. The Kalimar is labelled MACRO, but both are 1:6 magnification.

Thanks for that info. I think it is safe to asume it is Cosina made. It is not necessarily safe to assume the lenses are identical however, since they would have to have the same optical formula, glass source and coating. The only way to tell for sure is to take them apart and test the components!

Here's why I think they're identical:
- same construction. I've interchanged the aperture assemblies, front face, ball bearings and pins.
- identical burling, conformation and writing on the barrels.
- same purple tint to the coatings
- both are 1:6 magnification

I can't test the components, but the only difference I can see is the writing on the front and rear face. One rear face reads "P/K-A R-PK", the other says "P/K-A . R" I don't know which is which, because the Kalimar was assembled improperly when I got it, and I changed the rear faces back and forth several times to get both working. The surgery to remove the Ricoh pin and extra wide flange was already done on the Kalimar, I had to do it for the Image. Only the Image has all the parts now, the Kalimar is missing the aperture detent ball and the pins to set f2.8 and f4. I could substitute tinfoil for the missing pins, but I only use the Kalimar in reverse mode for super macro, so no point. I carry the Image in my main kit, but I only tend to use it at f2.8, since the 16-45mm is very nearly as good at f4 and up.

I paid $25 for one and $35 for the other. I like the colours and bokeh a lot, but it's a tie for worst flare performance with my DA 18-250mm. I use a 49mm standard (50mm) rubber hood which does not vignette even wide open. I get overexposure when I stop down, but it's easy to manage because it's consistent. I do prefer the fov of 28mm over 35mm. I'd like to get a similar lens in 24mm if there is such a thing (by similar I mean equivalent rendering, f2.8 and 49mm filter size)

Here are some photos of the lenses and a few boring pet and flower shots. Picasa Web Albums - Dan - 28mm lenses

Thanks for all that detail. As someone who has actually disassembled these things, you are in a better position than any to know if they are the same!

Hello guys, I've recently aquired what apears to be an A03 variant of the Vivitar 28mm and am glad to join this club.
I am seeking for some personal experiences about mounting it by someone who owned this lens, for it seems to have the infamous Ricoh pin. I would really like to avoid surgery on the lens if it is not nesesarry.

btw, for the case it is not avoidable I've found this page by rparmar to fix the issue, if anyone knows a different/better way to do it you are welcomed to suggest

Cheers

Follow my recipe and all will be well. It's really easy as you only need a common screwdriver and a few moments. I am lousy with anything practical and even I can do it!

This is a good page on ways to deal with this problem. Me, I'd take it to someone at a machine shop and get them to do it.

For those who are not subscribed to the other thread... The Bestiary has been updated with a lens database, pictures of every variant, references, advice etc. etc.

Trying to figure out if this is a good one, I looked over that site and am still confused, I know some of these are great and some I heard are not so great. Any idea about this on based on pictures?
