Why is the DA 40mm 2.8 so inexpensive?

I just looked at the price of a Pentax DA 40mm 2.8 so inexpensive compared to other lenses of the same quality?
Is it because it is so popular (make lots of them, and can keep prices down (like the 50mm standard lens)
cheaply built?
Not same optical quality (don't think so but never know)

At $299 canadian dollars it seems almost to good to be true.

any thoughts welcome!

cheers

299 CAD almost seams unreal to me, but the pancake is cheaper than all the other DA limiteds simply because it's so small

Optically, it's superb, and the bokeh is fantastic thanks to the 9 aperture blades. I wish I used mine more often...

Its probably so inexpensive, because the research and development of the lens has long since been paid for.. From what I understand, it is the same lens as the 40/2.8 M.

The DA pancake isn't the same as the M pancake. The optical design is nearly identical, but there are crucial differences that change color rendition and aspect between the two lenses.

After some tests, I've found that the DA lens seems to have an effective focal length of slightly more than 40mm compared to the original M lens. It has smoother bokeh and is sharper, however.

Having owned or currently owning the DA40, FA50, FA43ltd, I say the DA 40 is superb, and an excellent lens. Night shots at wide open are sharp and pleasing, quickshift focus is great, and so is the unbelievably small size. The only thing that annoyed me about it was the metal screw on cap, but I'm sure there's a plastic replacement which can be used. It's an amazing value.

Randy,
I have noticed that Pentax lens prices in Canada are very aggressive. Many of the lenses are priced the same in Canada as the US. It does help to explain the lack of rebates in Canada. The rebates help to keep lenses 'cheaper' in the US. I've been considering one as well (tough choice between this, the 43LE, and the FA 35mm). Of course, SMC-M 40 mm pancakes show up regularly on eBay. I've been thinking that this might be a good 'first' manual lens.
