Raise of price DA*50-135 in Canada : I feel I want to cry

Of course, this is just an expression, but I am so sad and mad.

For more than six months I keep on looking at different shops online and notice that prices are going down more and more, down to 899 $CAD two months ago.
My wife wants to offer it to me for my birthday which falls on the last day of this month of april.
I check again the price tonight to see were I can order it, and then the nightmare : 1700 $CAD !!!!!!

I am speechless... Need your help guys, please tell me this isn't true !

did you check out mcbain camera Canada. You might be able to buy one there. Hope this helps you out friend. I bought the lense a year ago. It is a sweet lense, love to use ok more often but with 4 kids and a baby on the way and work, no time. But it is there when I get the time to use it. I just checked out their websight it is available for less than 1000.00 Canadian dollars.
Ps Happy Birthday and I hope you get you're gift soon.

Yup, it's true.

Either locate a used copy for a good price or try doing some cross-border shopping, find a good deal online, and bring it across the border yourself. Since you are close to the Pacific Border Crossing, I'd suggest looking at using one of the parcel receiving services just across the border (I use US Mailbox Street Address).

Good luck and happy hunting.

In London Drugs last week they were still selling the K20 + 16-50 for exactly the same price : that would be a better deal !

Why did Pentax Canada raise the price that way ? Even with the raise of prices in US and the currency, the price should be no more than 1250 $CAD ! Why 450 $CAD more ???

Legacyb4, thank you for the idea, but because of the currency, it will be still too expensive for me.

ABCWinter thank you for your greetings But if Pentax Canada treats its clients that way, I don't see any reason why I should be the one to do an effort for them. I think I will go back to the basic...

Yes I saw it too, and at Lens & Shutter at the same price also : but in adding 12% of tax, I am really far from the 1000 now....

If you buy online from McBain camera in Alberta, you would only pay 5% GST + shipping..

Thank you guys for your replies : but I can't buy one in knowing that just one week ago it was 100 $CAD less. This is exactly the same product, so no reason to spend more.

Pentax Canada is just great with us : they want us to keep our money to face the crisis. How good they are !

There are a few thread on this unprecedented lens price hike. There is aboslutley no reasonable explanation for some of these increases with the DA* 50-135 being the most outrageous.

The Market Place - US - Ebay are the only viable alternatives for that particular lens. Others are well lenses from Tamron / Sigma / etc.

Personally I always tried to support local buisness in most of my purchases (camera and otherwise) - but given these events I can't see myself buying any new Pentax Lenses at any Canadian dealers.

Recent Example for less than what a new Canadian DA* 50-135 costs I bought a K20D (Market Place), Tammron 70-200 f2.8(Market Place) and a DA 35LTD macro(new)

I feel your pain. If I were living in Canada, I'd simply jump ship.

If you do not want to pay 100 More um have you tried the market place, you might find someone there selling their copy. At least it is worth a try. If you get no luck there try the 2 places suggested above, before their prices go insane. Good luck.

And again, if you are buying from the U.S. new or resell, have it shipped to Blaine and pick it up yourself to avoid crazy shipping/customs handling charges (it's up to you to declare the lens when you come across ).

Cheers.

I’m curious. Historically, how do price increases such as this affect used equipment. Does the tide raise all boats or just the new ones?

Wow, 1700 for a DA*50-135 its a nice lens, but damn. I'm glad I bought mine when I did, based on the 1700 CAD price tag, I've had a better return on my DA*50-135 than I've had in the stock market, and my RRSP's.
