LBA: Voigtlander 180mm f4 Apo Lanthar SL II

This lens has been in my posession for a while, acquired from Kelly (Pirate). A lens that is kept in absolutely pristine condition.

After some intermittent use, I found this lens a very special one.

You might say that the maximum aperture of this lens is only f4.

However, this lens is so much smaller than any lenses I own with similar focal length. The lens is totally made of metal with low weight. Beautiful lens for a lens collector.

F4 allows me to manual focus a lot easier for distant subjects. The images are crispy and sharp from corner to corner. The bokeh is also pleasant typically from Apo version of Voigtlander lenses.

I am so happy that this lens is now in my posession.

It would be VL 90mm f3.5 that I like the best. It is capable of close up focus, sharp and crisp at f3.5. The colour and the bokeh are very creamy smooth. A favorite lens of mine.

VL 125 macro is great but it is a little too low contrast wide open.

I learnt a fact that all Apo Lanthar lenses are very good quality in deed. Pity that these lenses are of limited production.

Very nice shots! This lens has special written all over it. Those 2 birds are real cool. What is that white thing on the center of that beautiful woman's forehead?

Thanks

She seems to have some funny taliman placed on her forehead. Maybe a spirtual believer.

I've been waiting for your post on this lens since I saw that you had your name down first for this 180. Congrats on picking up the 180. I wound up with his 90 (amongst others) If only I had known the charms of the 90 sooner, I'd have been on the hunt for the 180 much sooner.

The 90 has won me over! Can't believe the IQ that is packed into that tiny lens!

How do the 90 and 180 compare as far as color and detail?

Glad to see you are enjoying the 180 James! (And Brian the 90!) The 180 is a great 'pocket' tele. Close focus allowed its smooth bokeh to shine, true APO gives a very clean image, so sharp and so small! And the build quality is top notch. Hard to beat the combo unless AF is a necessity. I miss the lack of Voigtlander for the A900, I've been adjusting to my new glass and focusing on new discoveries to fill the gaps.

Still have a couple 180 shots on my zenfolio page from that lens -

Hehe, it is hard to compare the two. Funny that I only wrote the article about equivalence in camera/image quality comparison

Part I

Part II

Part III

Subjectively and unscientificly, I feel that 90mm f3.5 outperforms 180mm f4. However, the difference in IQ is minimal.

Wonderful shots James and it looks like you've got yourself some stellar glass there. I don't know if I should thank you for feeding my LBA!
