Tamron 300mm F3.5 question

Not sure if it's just me having to get used to this lens or not, but what I'm finding is that the further away I am from an object, the further my focus seems to be off. If taking a shot of something up close, I'm good, but the further away I am, the more I seem to be off. If I'm focusing on say a bird, the focus seems to be closer to me, and the bird is just past the part that is in focus. I've not had any issues with any of my Takumars, so just not sure if it's the lens, me, or the camera. Maybe just harder to get accurate focus with this lens?

I lied about the lens, it's not 3.5, it's a 5.6.

That is likely what's making it harder. The faster lenses make it easier to see transitions in and out of focus. The viewfinder will also be brighter. You should be able to improve with practice, or a split-prism screen.

Thanks for the reply. I've actually got the Catzeye focusing screen. It was well worth the money on the takumars. Just can't seem to get as accurate with this 300 Tamron. I guess I'll just have to keep practicing.

Does the IST d have focus confirmation, if so are you getting that confirmation when you focus?

After installing the Katzeye, I don't get any confirmation, but I think I read on the forum, that can happen with this camera and the Katzeye. No confirmation with any of my lenses, not just the Tamron.

Are you using a tripod when you are shooting with the 300 mm?

Nope, I've not tried it with a tripod. I would expect blury images without the tripod, but where the image is focused is obviously in front of the object I was aiming for. I may play with it on a tripod, just to see though. Good idea.
