Is $200 too high for an S-Tak 85mm 1.9?

Believe me, I can't afford it. But I'm going to contact the seller and see if he'll take $100 on Wednesday (payday) and the rest on the 30th (another payday).

For my Spotty collection:

Pentax Super Takumar 85mm f1.9 m42 screw-mount lens* - eBay (item 280333232703 end time Apr-19-09 13:58:46 PDT)

I have no problem posting this link, because maybe one of you guys will do the BIN and save me the $200 plus shipping from this LBA moment.

It's a great lens, right? I already have the 105, but that's a different number, you know?

Kind of hard to say. Have you looked up what other copies are going for?
Seems reasonable to me.

If you look at the Lens Review section of this site, you'll see that members paid an average of $263 for it.

I mean considering that the lens isn't in production anymore, you should probably grab it.

Thanks for the input. I just sent him the email, so we'll see what he says.

It's not in the most stellar condition, but for 35mm portrait work (the boring kind), this seems to be the stellar configuration.

Mike, you're dealing with your typical dumb American here:

What is $500 AUS in "real" money? Like a billion dollars?

You're Australian, so I KNOW you can appreciate that line in the good humor that it was intended.

roughly $365.00 USD would say its worth the $200 if in good shape, bought mine for slightly more than $200

hahah, no worries mate.

My ebay translates all foreign currencies to AU Dollars. I though yours would too.

That is $365 USD. I'd love to tell you the price in big-macs but i have no idea what one costs.

Your what, 1.8 or 1.9. If you paid slightly more than $200 for the 1.8 you got a very good deal.
$200 isn't a bad deal for the 1.9. I wouldn't pay too much more than that. They come around fairly often in various conditions. The 1.8 is a bit more scarce.

have the 1.9 the same as the OP is asking about if I had the 1.8 I would have mentioned that

A little over a year ago I sold an 85mm f/1.9. It was pretty ratty, there was some corrosion on the diaphragm, a little dust on the inside, and the barrel was fairly scuffed up with my Social Insurance number etched into it. I'd owned it for over 20 years and had dragged it all over, usually in a motorcycle bag rattling around with my camera and other lenses—all thrown in loosely, no padded separators for me. There were no problems with the glass, but the bodywork was pretty banged up. I still managed to get $129 US for it. So $200 for a much much nicer example doesn't seem like too much of a stretch.

I paid $280 for a very nice copy of the 1.9 once, so $200 BIN is.... tempting. Uh oh.

I paid $250 for a S-M-C 1.9 version with a dent to the filter ring (still accepts filters). That was a bit high I thought, but I've used it for some very satisfying results. I have a regular pristine Super Tak version that was $200 as well and I'm not sure how I got it so cheap. Can't decide which I'm willing to part with. But get the one you've found for $200, you won't be disappointed. And in the end that's the only true measure of of a lens' value

Ira:

I have an interest in that lens, along with the 85mm 1.8 Super and Auto Taks. That is not a bad price. I have been watching these lenses sell for a year on Ebay. But, of course, the lens has to be in good shape. If you have any questions at all, be sure to ask the seller first.

I have seen them sell from $180 to $325. But the $325 one was near mint, with original leather case and a hood. Best.

And that one ended up being sold to me ... and I can safely say it is a VERY nice lens indeed ... $200USD is a GOOD price for this lens.

An opportunity not to pass up I say.

I never knew why you sold it though Jay ... it really is a gem not to sell.

I hate to say what I paid for mine, just 3 years ago. This seems high in comparison but 85s are in demand and that's what they go for. I remember how my dad was with car prices, anything over what he paid in 1973 was outrageous. Mine is an early 60s version like this one. It's pure fun just to use.
