swans and other wildlife

hello,

The (recently acquired) summer house appears to have a shedload of interesting birds. My 50-200 isn't long enough.

So. Question: Is the 55-300 any good? Or should I use a TC? Or a prime? or a fat Sigma? Or the 70-300?

I'd like some semblance of speed (sunshine is a rarity so quality at 1/125 - f8 is a must) and IQ. Swans, Pheasants, Wild Turkey, I'd expect some moose too. Cam is a K10D, and budget is limited.
ATM I'm thinking about the K 300/f4, possibly with a TC. I don't have an issue with making a tripod adapter / finding a gimbal.

your thoughts?

Bret

The Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 works very well with the Kenko 1.5X AF and Kenko 2x AF teleconverters. The DA*300mm also works with the Kenko 1.5x AF TC. Many pics have been recently posted with both lenses

OOOOOPs... I missed the limited budget part

I use the Pentax 55-300, great lens for its price, I have had good results using it for all wildlife and birds especially.

if sunshine is a rareity have you considered flash.

I use it frequently.

this can also impact your lens decision

I use the K300mm F4 with the 1.7x AF TC this is a good combo but uless you get the A lens you can't use flash effeively on the K10D. I use this combo mostly either in full daylight with the K10D or in flash situations with my *istD.

see below for examples of both;

the 70-200 is my first choice but I have a strong feeling I can't get away with it.

So that means loosing the 50-200 and replacing with the 55-300, I think, for the time being and seeing what happens, unless I can get a cheap 300 somewhere. Will have to keep my eyes open.

thanks.

I also have a sigma APO 70-200 F2.8 EX, that I use with a sigma APO-DG 2X TC

the results are stunning, and this is my preferred fully automatic solution, on the K10D

Bird pics from the 55-300mm to help you decide.
All pics are not cropped.

I almost bought the Sigma 120-400mm for bird and wildlife photog. After comparing DA 55-300 and Sigma 120-400mm pictures on Flickr I went for DA 55-300mm.

This photo was taken the same day I bought the lens. Cropped to a 5,5Mpix. image and resized to 1280*850pix.
