Lowell: Not so sure they are Auto focus, but at least one photo and some write ups indicate Auto exposure, which is more important.
Thanks for the correction--I agree, auto-exposure is more important. That is what I get for assuming.

There is another advantage though.......................................no more fiddling with an M42 adapter.

thanks.

The link you show has a photo of a manual apature lens.

I will look into the one B&H has at $350 because the extra $50 is worth it for an KA mount lens.

I wonder in reality what you get as I have now seen both varients for about the same price.
I bought the Vivitar version and it certainly had 'auto' aperture.

I did not like MF and I sold it to a forum member, and when he tested it the aperture was getting stuck, and when I got it back the aperture was pretty much stuck in it's place wide open. It was still within the replacement time (thanks to the the fast shipping the buyer chose to return the lens), and a new replacement is on it's way. So, quality is some what in question...hopefully it is a freak copy.

I have bought the FA77/1.8 in the mean time, so I may put this back in the marketplace, however, I really do need a fast prime form aquariums and such, so may decide to keep it.

I will post more images.

Some test samples from my first lens, wide open at f1.4

Another one wide open against the bright sunlight to show CA...my FA77 shows similar CA or more.....

I have an old Tele-Vivitar 85mm f/1.8. It has a remarkable softness/crazy bokeh wide open, but is nice and sharp stopped down. I doubt it is what the OP is looking for, but it is always fun to share.

Hope the above images taken with the Vivitar 85/1.4 were useful....FYI, I have put the lens up for sale in the marketplace. I got the FA77 for it's AF.

Original Poster
this thread has crossed with another quite by accident.

I ultimately got a vivitar 85mm F1.4 and yes it is auto exposure.

in looking at another thread questioning why is there nothing between 100mm and 200mm, I decided to try the vivitar 85mm F1.4 with my SMC-F 1.7x AF TC.

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/582342-post9.html

very soft wide open but stop down 2 stops

as for MF, on its own, with a diagonal split image in my K10D it is a dream to use. talk abotu a bright viewfinder, when you compare this to the garbage attached to a camera as a kit lens (sorry for all those who love their kit lens) and the small maximum apatures, it will blow you away

Whoa, those are super portraits especially the last one! He looks like young inquisitor with that black hood. You should print that out and hang on the wall
