LBA and $700 .....

So if you had between 400 - 750 to spend and wanted a general purpose lens which one ? Or should I wait (and save) for the new DS* 16-45 ? That gets a little more expensive I think.

I will be going to Vegas in the fall (so night shots of the strip) , San Fran next month (maybe a ball game ) and a Ball tournament this July (canid shots - day light and low light)

Sigma AF 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC - $699
Pentax SMC-DA 16-45mm F4.0 ED AL $399
Tamron AF17-50mm F2.8 Di XR II $529
Pentax DA 14mm F2.8 lens (used ) $375.00
Other suggestions ?

I read all the "only one lens thread" - I think the 17/18 - 45/50 is more or less a majority vote fot best all pupose.

Opinions welcome !

The 16-45mm is a great lens, and I could not say anything bad for it. But as for night shots, why not look towards a 50mm F/1.4? Its pretty cheap as well, and together, those two lenses would give you range, as well as a low-light portrait lens.

Here's my vote

Sigma 17-70mm $390
Pentax FA 50mm $220
Pentax DA 50-200mm $230
Thats 840 - 75 in rebates = 765 . Somewhat over budget but a great range with great lenses you can be proud of

Sigma AF 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC - $699 $360 Here I thought about that lens but I went with the Pentax SMC-DA 16-45mm F4.0 ED AL from henrys.com ebay auction for $340 shipped. So I'd get one of those two and now you still can aford the DA 14mm.

The Sigma EX 18-50/2.8 only costs $300US Buy-It-Now from Cameta Camera. (there's still 4 or 5)

eBay: Sigma 18-50mm EX DC Digital Lens for Pentax *ist DL DS (item 160105093464 end time Apr-19-07 17:13:53 PDT)

As mentioned earlier the DA50-200 is also a good bet altough 230 is a bit pricey as they can be bought for $199CAN

Well then that's another story.

I hope it's going to be good as everyone makes it sound. Personally I won't buy it for a long time though.

I am sure the *16-50 2.8 is going to be worth every penny, but I would put that baby to rest at that price they want for it in Canada and get 1 low light prime and a moderately priced zoom. Once you get your hands on a low light prime and see how versitile it really is, the zoom might just play second fiddle to it for a lot of your shots.
50 1.4 or the DA 40 pancake ($299 at Henrys) and one of those zooms would be more then enough.... but I would want a good 1:1 macro so maybe through in a few extra $$$$ or so

good luck with it, let us know how you make out

If I had that much to budget for lens purchasing, I'd buy a metric buttload of M42 Takumars and spend the next six months giggling uncontrollably.
