Kit lens replacement? Sigma 17-70 or Pentax 16-45?

Hi all!

I am looking for a kit replacement, and it is between a Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 or the Pentax DA 16-45.

From the review they both look like excellent lenses. I am leaning towards the Sigma because of it's macro capabilities and longer reach, but really I am mostly looking for IQ, especially at wider angles.

I considered the DA* 16-50mm but I don't really need 2.8 at the longer range, my 50mm f1.4 prime works the best there anyway

Anyone where worked with both of these?

In the same boat.

Was actually consider 16-45 or the sigma 18-50 2.8...

Would like it in low light situations, any input with the 16-45 with low light?

For me Sigma is the winner. First because of the range wich was important for me. Second the macro function, however it's magnification stucks around 1:2.3 or something like that, this lens delivered me some nice macro shots.

The Pentax is really a nice lens, but not really nice enough in a comparison to the Sigma when I tried both. My only advise is, try both!

I upgraded my kit lens to various lens such as Pentax FA 28-105mm f/3.2-4.5 and Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. And I finally ended up with Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5. I rate the zoom the most versatile in walk around for portraits, candid and close up. It is small and compact in size and I highly rate it after my portrait zoom with Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8.

Because I already owned the Tamron 28-75mm, my choice was the DA16-45mm. I had a chance to test the Sigma 17-70mm and it's a nice lens. To my eye the Pentax renders better but only a little. The Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 is not as good as either lens.

The Pentax can close focus as well so there's no loss there. I decided on the Pentax for a couple of reasons. Better coatings and flare control SMC is still the best of any brand. Quick shift focus is a great feature. Best image rendering and colour of the lenses in this FL. I have a DA*16-50mm as well and the 16-45 is still just as sharp and can compete with that lens. Finally I am not a fan of variable aperture lenses. A real PITA in tougher light conditions or when trying to get a certain OOF look in an image.

Another Sigma fan

Another vote for the Sigma 17-70 here.

It is my official "on vacation" lens, getting me some really nice landscapes as well as portrait style medium zooms. If you're shooting wildlife, it's not your lens ... maybe if the wildlife is the neighbor's beagle, but not much else.

It renders a bit colder than Pentax glass. The only noticeable point of softness is at 17mm wide open...but that's pretty much it.

Highly recommended, get one.

Here's something else to ponder. I've had both. Sigma starts out from the wide end at F2.8 and from memory by 23mm it is still at F3.5. After that it becomes F4 and stays at f4 until 63mm when it becomes F4.5. Pentax is F4 throughout. So I consider the Sigma faster and I enjoyed the range in the short while that I had it. I think the Pentax does a little better in edge sharpness. And as Peter mentioned, the Pentax has the quick shift. I think Sigma has a little edge over the Pentax everything considered.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I think the Sigma is the best choice for me based on the type of shots that I would like to take. I might have sprung for the DA*, but I need to save up for the 12-24mm
