One hellva piece of glass

Hey all,

Yesterday went shooting with a buddy of mine at the Braves game, him with his Canon, me with my Pentax. I think I had more fun because I remembered the telephoto, but that's not the point.

We got to talking about extreme lenses, and he told me about this one:
Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6 L USM Lens Review

$90K for a lens!?!? Apparently, it is an awesome one, I was just wondering, what does Pentax have? What's Pentax's biggest/most expensive lens? I'm not looking to get into a thing on quality, and why one brand is better then another. I don't really care one way or another (I like my Pentax, him his Canon).

Thanks,
Oren

A quick google found a Pentax 1200mm F8

Amazon.com: Pentax SMCP-A 1200mm f/8.0 ED IF Lens with Trunk Case: Camera & Photo

It's a good question so I'm going on a deeper hunt.

The A*1200mm runs for about 12K or so from what I've seen:

1200mm f/8 SMCP-A ED (IF) Telephoto Lens

That is if you can find one. One of the forum members here has one and did an AMAZING moon shot with it.

I'd rather pay the toll and cross the bridge to do those shots

One of my all-time favorite shots I've seen on this board.

The most expensive Pentax lens I found in my old catalogues (1995 to 1997) was the 67 system 800/6.7, which cost a mere 27,000 DM which equals app. 14,000 Euros.

The most expensive 35mm lens is (according to these old catalogues) indeed the A* 1200/8, which was 23,000 DM (app. 12,000 Euros). The 2000/13.5 reflex lens was much cheaper at 18,000 DM (app. 9,375 Euros).

I am not sure about measuring equipment, but the most expensive Pentax telescope on the price list is the refractor 250SD (since 1994) which is a beast of 3000mm focal length and weighs in at app. 80 kgs. As far as I know, you can buy it only with the dedicated mount MS3600, which weighs another 500kgs (!). The price in my list of 1995 is 2.3 million DM (app. 1.2 million Euros. That beats any Canon lens...

You can still buy Pentax scope optics in the Borg scopes. May be they sell more that way.

Welcome to Carl Zeiss Camera Lenses

I think the Zeiss 1700/4 is the king of the big/expensive lenses...

I think i remember seeing pictures of that lens at one of the shows last year. I looks like it belongs on a hover tank of some sort.
