What's wrong with the K 135 F2.5?

NaCl(not auto focus? pffft! I do admit I wish it was auto aperture tho)H2O

I pretty quickly got hold of a Takumar Bayonet 135 2.5, just too much fun potential. I wish it was an 'a' lens, too, just to be quicker.

I never thought all that much of the length in 35mm, but it does a nice job on crop of cutting out the unnecessary at a distance, and it's fast and compact enough to come with me a lot more than even the old telezooms I'd often go with. I think.

Certainly having a bit of fun with it, something a little different than I'd do with full-frame. I suppose they could make one really fast and expensive, but how about regular old DA? Little bit of 2.8 tele prime in your pocket could be a lot of fun for a lot of people. maybe.

There's nothing wrong with the old glass. I'm quite enjoying my growing selection. Hell, I'd be tickled pink if they merely dusted off the old specs, jigs and whatnots and breathed some new shelf life into several of the former stars and work horses.

Sort of. It probably makes more sense to look at it "multiplicatively", like f-stops. 150 is 1.5 times 100, but 200 is only 1.33 times 150. You'd actually want something more like a 140mm lens to feel "exactly between" 100 and 200 - the same 1.4 (square root of two, actually) factor used in focal lengths. So in that sense, a 135 is a lot closer to perfect than you might think - it's closer than 150, anyhow.

I suppose it goes without saying - but if it bears saying once, it bears repeating:

If you want that focal length, there are any number of really good and inexpensive options out there, if you don't need the camera to focus it for you. The M135/3.5 is very good, very inexpensive, and wonderfully compact. You can get even better IQ and up to a stop more speed by giving up a little in the price and size/weight department.
Yea, I have that in my bag as well as a few other old primes.

Have not had a chance to really give an outdoor test.

Based on your words, I am glad I have it.

I tried it indoors.

Looked ok under the low lighting.

But the closest focusing distance is in feet not inches.

I guess I was expecting to much.

But it is a beatiful compact SMC lens nonetheless.

I'm "patiently" awaiting the arrival of an M135/3.5 myself.

I guess the question is, why not a 150mm macro not why is there between 100 and 200 mm.

my experience with most portrait and medium tele lenses is that minimum focus is always restricted. newer models with internal focusing may improve on this but don't expect much.

you can always add either extension tubes or close up lenses if you want to get much closer with something like a 135. I have done both with my SMC 135 F2.5 and it works well. a 1 dipoter gives you focusing from 1 meter down to about 600mm and if you go to plus 4 diopters you can work between 200 and 250mm at .7 magnification ratio.

True, although not an issue for my main usage (concert photography). Anyhow, pop a $50 Raynox 150 in front and see what you think! I reckon at minimum focus distance, that combination should be close to 1:1.

I've actually just ordered a 49-43mm step-down ring to allow me to mount the Raynox on my 135 (and my other lenses with 49mm filter size) without the bulky and clumsy clip on adapter that itself needs to be attached to a 49-52 step-up ring in order to fit these lenses. Pathetic as it seems, that clip-on adapter is the biggest reason I don't use my Raynox 150 more than I do. I think once the step-down ring arrives, I'll be much more likely to actually carry the Raynox with me. Next step: coming up with a convenient protective carrying case (right now I wrap it in a cotton cloth). A simple little change purse type of thing would probably do the job nicely. I image most dedicated filter cases are either overkill or else not wide enough.

I'd love to see Pentax remake some of the old "A" lenses, update the glass coatings and release them as DA Limited, and then release some plastic versions with less coating and IQ as regular DA models. I sure hope that Pentax makes a step to that direction in the future, making lens models to match up with their camera body models. It sounds like that is where they are heading, I just hope that they dont deviate from that plan.

Canon's 135mm F2 is one of their most desirable lenses IMHO - it is a fantastic length and speed for weddings. Not only that but it is (I think) their cheapest L lens. These things would seem to be a positive indication that Pentax could make an affordable and good version in a DA* (~$600-$800).

Raynox, a close up lens or lens adapter or another lens that fit on the 135 with the step down ring?

Well Marc I just recieved my reversing ring adapter and tried it on my 135.

IT DON'T WORK. (The lens attaches ok, but it won't focus).

It works on my Super TAK 55 f/1.8.

I guess it will work on my M 50 f/2

The Raynox looks intrieging.

Are they out there like older Pentax lenses are?

I'm not sure what you mean by "it won't focus" - obviously, a reverse lens has no AF. You can't focus anywhere you want - focus it only possible at certain distances. My guess is you just haven't found the right distance.

Raynox is company that makes a wide variety of products, but the 150 and 250 are closeup lenses that attach to the front of an ordinary lens. They are *much* higher quality than the diopter sets sold in all photo stores and all over Ebay, but don't cost much more. While Im sure you could find one used, they are still available new from places like Amazon or other larger camera dealers.
