Has anyone just turned off SR for hand holding? Can you get clearer pictures without it provided your hand is steady enough and your shutter speed is high enough?
I've been taking photographs without shake reduction for the last 25 years.

Clearer? Under most circumstances, I sincerely doubt it. If the mechanism is working correctly, it shouldn't ADD any movement, only cancel it.

(Granted, "if the mechanism is working correctly" may be an unwarranted assumption. But in my experience, it works pretty well.)

As clear? Sure! If you hold steady enough, or the shutter speed is high enough, no problem. As Dom said, that's how it used to be done!
