FA 50mm f1.4 vs. DA 55mm f1.4

Big difference in price ($369 vs. $799) but is the optical difference that far apart? I haven't used either yet, but I know the more expensive one looks the part and is weatherproof, but is it optically worth more than double?

I believe there's a thread on this topic already.

As to optically worth more than double, I believe that's up to you to decide. It's better, yes, but as to how much that difference is worth is completely subjective. Some people won't think it's worth it while to others it'll be completely worth it

Do you have a link to the thread. I have a hard time getting anything to come up when I search for topics before I post them. I've searched key words before, didn't see anything at all, only to find several posts later in my travels. Thanks

I own the FA 50, but not the DA* 55. I think the DA 55 is a little sharper wide open and the bokeh is a little less busy.

The question really comes down to how much you are willing to pay for that extra 5 percent of improvement that you get with one versus the other. It is the eternal question: value for money. Higher end lenses just give you small improvements for the extra cash needed to acquire them.

I have scratched my head about the expense of the 55mm myself. Perhaps if I used it I would understand, but I used the M series 50mm 1.4 for close to 20 years, and lugged tripods all over the world so that I could shoot Agfapan 25 and Kodachrome 25 landscapes and architecture through it. I've tested that lens in ways not possible in the current digital formats, and its hard for me to imagine the benefit of a sharper lens with today's sensors.

By the way, shouldn't this thread be in the lens forum?

I've felt that Search function on this forum could use some improvement, or may be some help on how to use it effectively.
