Hong Kong Pentax specialists

Ok, i'm only a stone throw away from Hong Kong, in Guangzhou, and i know this question has been asked before but where can i find relatively cheap glass in HK?

In most instances i have been advised to check out Tin Cheung Camera Co. in the heart of the tourist district of Tsim Sha Tsui. And although they are friendly, tourist districts don't usually offer the best prices on any kind of goods. The lens i am after in particular is the FA 35mm.. and there is no doubt that Tin Cheung stock it, as i went there last month, but the price has risen some 300 odd HKD since 2008. Currently they are selling the FA 35mm for 2310 HKD which is 388 AUD or 298 USD. I am thinking this is a little too much. Can anyone suggest any other places to check out?

I think Tin Cheung also sell the lens as a grey market item for 200 HKD cheaper but not sure if i should go down this path. Any thoughts, opinions, suggestions appreciated.

Cheers.

I do understand this lens has been discontinued but i had found a list, as of 2008, that quoted the price at under 2000 HKD.

I got my FA 35/2 from Wing Shing in Mong Kok last November for $1950HKD, when they had it on special. It was HK stock, but I went the the Pentax distributor/office or whatever in Kowloon Bay the next day and changed it to an international one.

Here's a good price list for Pentax stuff in HK: Pentax Price List (Editgrid) | ???
Unfortunately for you though, looks like the lowest recent price for the FA35/2 is around 2300HKD; the DCFever price says 1980HKD, but that was in Oct 08.

I'm still kicking myself for not getting more gear when I was also in HK in June last year, the exchange rate was about $1AUD : $7HKD, if not more.

Does anyone else have any recent experience with buying in HK?

There are two places near DCFever in Mongkok under the names Wing Shing & Man Shing. Both owned by the same people i think. But i have heard service is quite shoddy at these two shops and they are reluctant to let you open boxes and have a look at what you are buying.

I too bought my FA35/2 from Wing Shing (99.9% sure Wing Somthing) for 1950HKD in Mong Kok. They had the most variety (esp. Pentax) out of like dozens of camera shops I visited.

The employee that answered my inquiries did surprisingly well, enough to show up many here in Toronto. The guy showed me the lens, opened it and let me test it out and even exchanged another copy due to some dust inside. (probably me being nit picky) Most of the employees for the most part in HK I found where grumpy, didn't know their stuff and not appreciative of my tourist questions and demeanor let alone questions about Pentax gear lol.

But yea Wing Shing will be one of the better places to go to. Great variety and decent staff (depends on who and what day i suppose). Prices were better than most I found during my winter visit to HK.

Also search for pentax in ????? Price.com.hk

That will lead you to additional retailers.
