K Series 100mm F4 Macro...Questions

Any experience with one? How good are they and how much should I expect to pay? Any sample photos? I see only one review on the review section of the forum.

Thanks,

optical identical to all pentax 1:4/100 macro's, (screw/K/M/A mount + bellows)
mechanical almost identical to the M.

Does this increase the review and sample selection enough ?

I agree with George: just google "Takumar 100/4" and you will get hundreds of references (including some of my pictures on this forum and others).

I happen to have the old screwmount version, which has the same optical formula as the more recent K series lens. It's a very good lens, with decent sharpness wide open, becoming very sharp at F/8 and beyond. The optical formula is the same as the famous Voigtländer Heliar lens: it's a modified triplet with 5 elements in 3 groups. Like the classic Voigtländer lens, the Pentax 100/4 exhibits an outstanding bokeh, making it very suitable for portraits. If you don't need a fast lens, this one is highly recommended.

Cheers!

Despite the optical similarity, it's more rare than M version, maybe even rarer than A version too. Price is not too steep on this one, should be around $150-$200. I saw this version once or twice in a year. If you are into 100/4 for taking photos, go get the M version which is much easily available and cheaper.

The K 100/4 Macro has a 52mm filter ring and the M version has a 49mm.

The K version is also longer and weights more.

Here is a picture of my K100/4 Macro:

I have one on its way. It is supposed to be here on Tuesday.

What do you think of the performance of the K version? You wouldn't happen to have any photos posted on the forums would you?

Thanks for the info.

I have used an SMC-M 100mm F4 for a long time. It is a nice compact and sharp lens. you will get to 1:2 with the lens alone but need extension tubes to get to 1:1.

The K100/4 macro is very sharp and similar to the K50/4 macro, but you have a greater “distance to subject” than the 50mm.

As Lowell mentioned get the Pentax Auto Extension tubes, so you can have 1:1 magnification.

I also recommend getting the lens hood, they are not that hard to find on eBay.

I only shoot film and have not scanned anything that I have taken with the K100/4. I have some K50/4 pictures that I scanned if you are interested.

Enjoy your new lens!

I have a copy of the original screw mount Macro-Takumar 50/4. It is 1:1 magnification and is a superb lens.

It is well worth the modest investment for both the lens and adapter - likely less than $100.

The extra 2x magnification is frequently convenient.

Well, marginally longer and heavier, not more than what it takes to add a 49 to 52 filter adapter to the M 100 macro.

I had Pentax K 100mm f/4.0 1:2 Macro before and it was such a charming lens to use. It has beautiful color and I love the manual focusing ring.

Thanks,
Hin

Looks like a good lens. Hopefully my copy will be good. You never know when you buy over the internet.

Just got the lens. Looks to be in new condition, other that a little dust. I will try to get some pics up later in the week, once I have had a chance to give it a try.
